2011 NFL Power Rankings, Week 8: Buccaneers Fall Out Of Top Ten After Loss To Bears

A week after knocking off the New Orleans Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell short in Week 7 to the Chicago Bears. The 24-18 defeat in London was the second loss for Tampa Bay in the United Kingdom. Josh Freeman played poorly in the loss, completing just 29-of-51 passing attempts for 264 yards and 4 interceptions. Freeman now has 10 interceptions in 7 games. That’s four more than he had in a full 16-game schedule in 2010.

Let’s take a look at how CBS dinged the Buccaneers for their latest loss in its Week 8 Power Rankings.

Comment: Two trips to London and two bad games for Josh Freeman. They might want to avoid the other side of the pond.

The Buccaneers now have two weeks to collect themselves and recuperate from the trip overseas. They better be ready to go when they return to action in Week 9, as a road trip to New Orleans awaits. You know the Saints will be looking for payback from the Week 6 defeat.

Week 8 NFL Power Rankings: Buccaneers Fall Out Of Top Half In ESPN's Latest

It’s Tuesday which means the roll out of a new set of NFL Power Rankings. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who lost to the Chicago Bears 24-20 in Week 7, naturally fell in most lists. Multiple media outlets however kept the Buccaneers in the top half of the league. FOX was less kind, sliding Tampa Bay all the way down to No. 18.

Let’s take a look at where Raheem Morris’ squad is ranked in ESPN’s latest Power Rankings..

Ranking (Last Week): 18 (12).
Record: 4-3
Comment: Josh Freeman has four more INTs through six games than he had in 16 games last season. (Sando)

After losing two of their past three, the Buccaneers now enter their bye week before returning to action in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints. They remain at home the following two weeks as well to host the Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers. Needless to say, we’ll know a lot more about whether the Bucs are ready to make good on their guarantee of making the playoffs in this next calendar month.

2011 NFL Power Rankings, Week 8: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Plummet To No. 16 In FOX Rankings

Sunday evening in London, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Chicago Bears, 24-20. The defeat, the Bucs' second in three weeks, sent them to 4-3 and into a tie with the Atlanta Falcons for second place in the NFC South. As a result, FOX Sports analyst Brian Billick dropped Tampa Bay a whopping seven spots in his latest NFL Power Rankings, to No. 16 overall. That's the lowest spot they've held in Billick's rankings this season. His reasoning:

Don't know what to make of the loss in London, as Josh Freeman looked absolutely terrible. Great time for a bye week to prepare for a run through New Orleans, Houston and Green Bay. That stretch will determine the fate of the Bucs.

One week after leading the Bucs to victory against the division-leading New Orleans Saints, Freeman threw four interceptions against the Bears and finished with a woeful passer rating of 51.4. The young quarterback will need to return to form in a hurry, given the tough schedule that looms ahead.

Elsewhere in the NFC South, the Saints place No. 3 on Billick's list. The Falcons climb to No. 9, and the Carolina Panthers improved to No. 20.

2011 NFL Power Rankings, Week 8: Buccaneers Ranked No. 15 In Pro Football Talk Poll

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are having a pretty up and down season. That's not totally unexpected from a team that is this young, but they really have been all over the place so far. Having said that, they're still been pretty consistently in the middle of the Power Rankings across the Internet, and the latest edition of the Pro Football Talk 2011 NFL Power Rankings are no exception. They have the Bucs rated as the No. 15 team in football.

If the goal is to build a fan base in London, the league should be sending back the teams that have actually, you know, won games there.

Well, maybe don't send them over there to play the Patriots and a Bears team that is coming off an appearance in the NFC Championship game last year. I understand the NFL's insistence on making the Bucs the team of London, at least in the short term, but you have to give them a chance to be successful.
