B.J. Daniels Injury Update: USF Quarterback's Status For Louisville In Question, So Team Prepares Bobby Eveld

The injury which forced South Florida Bulls quarterback B.J. Daniels to leave Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Miami Hurricanes is an "AC joint bruise," coach Skip Holtz told reporters Monday. Though it's still possible Daniels could play Saturday at home against the Louisville Cardinals, the team is preparing backup signal-caller Bobby Eveld for the game just in case.

Daniels injured his shoulder on a running play in the second quarter and did not return. Without him, the Bulls' offense ground to a halt. Evelt completed 5-of-9 passes for just 36 yards in relief of Daniels, but those numbers only tell part of the story. As Jamie DeVriend notes, USF gained just 75 yards of offense after Daniels' injury, as the absence of a dual-threat quarterback under center made the Bulls' offense less dynamic and more predictable.

Now in his junior season, Daniels has completed 60.4 percent of his passes, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. To that he's added 122 caries for 578 yards and five scores on the ground.

In contrast, Eveld has completed just 53.1 percent of his attempts this season, with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

B.J. Daniels Injury Update: South Florida Quarterback Will Have More Tests On Shoulder

The South Florida Bulls lost to the Miami Hurricanes this past weekend 6-3, but an even bigger loss might have been quarterback B.J. Daniels, who injured his shoulder during that game. According to Greg Auman of the St Petersburg Tribune, Daniels will have some more tests done on that shoulder this week, but that South Florida is trying to make back up plans in case he isn't able to go on the short week.

Daniels is still in play for Friday morning's home game against Louisville, though the Bulls will also get sophomore Bobby Eveld prepared for what would be his second career start. Eveld filled in for Daniels last season in a late-season loss to Connecticut, though he struggled to move the ball after replacing Daniels early in the third quarter.

Daniels might have his inconsistencies, but he is still one of the more talented players the Bulls have. They would miss him greatly if he wasn't available.

USF Vs. Miami: Hurricanes Win 6-3, Game Sets Football Back At Least 50 Years

Jake Wieclaw kicked a 36-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift the Miami Hurricanes to a 6-3 victory over the South Florida Bulls at Raymond James Stadium.

Although the first half did have some offense mixed in among the punting, the second half was not nearly as smooth. The teams combined for 10 second-half punts, and Miami had the only two sustained drives in the final two periods. The first one took up nearly half the third quarter, taking the Hurricanes to the USF 24-yard line. But Ryne Giddins got a hand on Wieclaw’s 41-yard field goal attempt, keeping the score tied at 3.

The second drive was the last one of the game. Miami went on a 61-yard, 15-play march that was almost all due to quarterback Jacory Harris. He completed all seven passes he attempted, and had a key 10-yard scramble when the Hurricanes were in 2nd and long inside their own 20-yard line. After Miami got into field-goal range, Skip Holtz opted not to use any of his three timeouts to try and save more time on the clock for USF to get the ball back, saving them for the field goal attempt. (In his defense, Miami had a 2nd and 1 and a 3rd and 1, and if the Hurricanes had converted either one it wouldn’t have mattered whether USF called timeout or not.)

The game turned when B.J. Daniels suffered a shoulder injury near the sideline on a running play. He was unable to return, and backup Bobby Eveld was completely ineffective. Since Eveld is not a threat to keep the ball, the running game stopped working, and he completed 5 of 9 passes for only 36 yards. The Bulls only gained 75 yards and three first downs with Eveld in the game, and one of the first downs was because of a personal foul on Miami.

The inept offensive performance wasted a great defensive effort from USF. They held Lamar Miller to just 51 yards rushing on 20 carries, locked down receivers Travis Benjamin and Tommy Streeter, and sacked Jacory Harris six times. But with USF’s already-conservative offense becoming even more so without their starting quarterback, it seemed like a matter of time until Miami figured out a way to score and win.

The Bulls fall to 5-5 and still need one more win to secure bowl eligibliity. Their next chance is Friday morning at 11:00 against Louisville at Raymond James Stadium.

USF Vs. Miami: Game Remains Tied 3-3 At Halftime

The second quarter between the Miami Hurricanes and South Florida Bulls turned into a punting contest. Neither team could get into scoring range, and the game remains tied 3-3 at the half.

It wasn’t as ugly as it sounds. Both teams were able to move the ball, but ended up stalling out in the middle of the field and leaving the other team with bad field position. USF drove 50 yards on one drive, thanks to a series of runs by B.J. Daniels and Darrell Scott, but had to punt from the Miami 38. Then on their last possession of the half, the Hurricanes got as far as the USF 31-yard line before a penalty and a sack of Jacory Harris by DeDe Lattimore forced them out of field goal range.

Harris is 13-for-19 passing for 137 yards, and USF has done a fairly good job containing running back Lamar Miler (41 yards on 10 carries). Darrell Scott has 45 yards rushing for the Bulls, who get the ball to begin the third quarter.

USF Vs. Miami: Bulls and Hurricanes TIed 3-3 Early In Second Quarter

The South Florida Bulls and Miami Hurricanes are tied at 3 just over a minute into the second quarter at Raymond James Stadium. Both teams would reach bowl eligibility with a win in today’s in-state matchup.

Each team committed an early turnover. Travis Benjamin fumbled on an end-around on Miami’s second play from scrimmage and USF recovered at the Hurricanes’ 45-yard line. But on the very next play, B.J. Daniels threw an ill-advised pass under pressure that was easily picked off by Miami.

After exchanging punts, Miami drove 77 yards on 16 plays, helped by a couple of nice escapes by Jacory Harris from USF pressure, and by a very questionable pass interference penalty on Kayvon Webster. The drive stalled inside the Bulls’ 10-yard line, but Jake Wieclaw’s 26-yard field goal opened the scoring.

USF answered with a 10-play, 49-yard drive that petered out as soon as the second quarter began. Maikon Bonani’s 42-yard field goal tied the score.

USF Vs. Miami: Bulls Will Have #ALLTHERECRUITS At Today's Game

Since this is the last Saturday home game of the season, the South Florida Bulls have picked today’s game as the Miami Hurricanes as the one they want to show off to potential recruits. According to Josh Newberg of USF recruiting site Bulls247.com (subscription required, although a free trial is available), there may be as many as 22 players that the Bulls are targeting from the Classes of 2012 and 2013 in attendance. (That’s not counting any recruits that Miami might have in the crowd for themselves.)

This just makes a big game even bigger. USF would be bowl-eligible with a win and would claim a victory over one of the “Big 3” in Florida for the third year in a row. But with Miami’s recent struggles on and off the field, the Bulls are starting to get into some recruiting battles with the Hurricanes that they hadn’t been able to compete in before. While Florida and Florida State still dominate in-state recruiting, there’s still plenty of talent to go around. A win might not mean much for either team this season, but it could mean a lot more for both teams in high schools and living rooms across Florida.

Miami Vs. South Florida: Bulls Look To Become Bowl Eligible Against Hurricanes

Coming off a Friday night drubbing of Syracuse last week, the South Florida Bulls host cross-state rival Miami on Saturday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium. The Bulls are 1-2 all time against the Canes in this recent series. Despite their 1-4 conference record, the Bulls remain above .500 at 5-4 and are looking to become bowl eligible. It would be extra sweet to get a berth with an out of conference win over the ACC.

The Canes travel to Tampa coming off a loss to their historic rival, the Florida State Seminoles. The Noles defeated the Canes 23-19 last week but the game was never that close, as Miami scored a late touchdown to make it respectable. Miami is 5-5 and also looking for a win an bowl eligibility.

The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN U, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30.
