USF Vs. Rutgers: Bulls Get Going In Second Quarter, Lead 10-0

The second half is just underway in Piscataway, New Jersey, and the South Florida Bulls lead the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 10-0. While neither team has been terribly impressive, USF got their offense in gear during the second quarter and launched two scoring drives to end the half.

The Bulls got on the board midway through the second quarter. After a short Justin Doerner punt, USF drove 58 yards on nine plays for the opening touchdown. The Bulls drove inside the Rutgers’ 20 (the only such drive for either team so far tonight), and following a sack of B.J. Daniels, Victor Marc caught a middle screen from Daniels and ran behind a convoy of blockers for a 23-yard touchdown.

Rutgers responded after the score, putting together their best drive of the game. They reached the USF 31-yard line, but then quarterback Gary Nova took two consecutive sacks. On the second one, Ryne Giddins got the sack, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble, and even returned it five yards, to the USF 49. After a short drive, Maikon Bonani kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Bulls their current lead.

USF held the Scarlet Knights to just 89 total yards in the first half, including -2 rushing yards. That has forced Nova to throw more, and while the Bulls have yet to intercept him, Nova hasn’t been very accurate.
