2012 Orange Bowl: West Virgina Scores Important Win For Big East

Throughout this season the Big East had been disrespected as a football Conference, both for their play on the field and their inability to keep their marquee teams in the fold. Heading into the Orange Bowl last night, they didn't have very many fans or supporters that felt like they could actually win. So what did West Virginia do? They hung 70 on the Clemson Tigers, and looked impressive in all parts of the game while doing so. According to Andrea Adelson of ESPN, it could be a big win for the Big East, even though West Virginia is on their way out.

No Big East team has been embarrassed in a BCS game the way West Virginia embarrassed Clemson in the Discover Orange Bowl. What was supposed to be an offensive shootout certainly was on the West Virginia side of the field. Clemson delivered duds in the form of turnovers, missed tackles and blown assignments.

West Virginia is on their way out, but their success over Clemson on Wednesday night should speak volumes about the kind of team that comes from the Big East on a yearly basis.

Orange Bowl 2012 Score Update: West Virginia Dominating Clemson, 49-20 At Halftime

The first quarter of the 2012 Orange Bowl featured a plethora of scoring and the second quarter was no different. There were a combined 31 points scored in the first quarter followed by a combined 38 points scored in the second quarter. The difference in the second quarter however was that West Virginia scored 35 of the 38 points. The Mountaineers took an early 21-17 lead in the second quarter, but the Clemson Tigers looked like they were about to re-take the lead before this happened...

Darwin Cook picked up the Andre Ellington fumble and sprinted 99 yards for the touchdown, putting the Mountaineers up 28-17. The Clemson implosion followed shortly after picking up a field goal to put the game at 28-20, turning the ball over and allowing three straight touchdowns by the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers closed out the first half scoring the fifth touchdown of the day, taking a 49-20 lead into halftime.

Orange Bowl 2012 Update: Clemson Leads West Virginia 17-14

The first quarter of the 2012 Orange Bowl was fast and furious, seeing 31 combined points scored. The first score of the game came on a long touchdown run by Clemson Tigers running back Andre Ellington, who broke free for 68 yards.

The West Virginia Mountaineers quickly went down the field on the ensuing drive however, picking up a few long plays and capped off by a Shawn Alston touchdown run to tie the game.

On Clemson's ensuing drive, just like their first scoring drive they were able to work their way right down the football field. The drive was capped off by a touchdown pass from Tajh Boyd to freshman wide receiver Sammy Watkins to take a 14-7 lead.

West Virginia was able to once again go right down the field on their ensuing drive, picking up a touchdown from Tavon Austin to tie the game at 14. The Clemson Tigers took the lead 17-14 heading out of the first quarter however after notching a field goal before the first quarter ended.

After calling the Outback Bowl earlier this week, the Monday Night Football duo of Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden will have the call from Miami tonight.

Orange Bowl 2012: West Virginia Arrives In Miami

The West Virginia Mountaineers have arrived in Miami ahead of their Orange Bowl matchup against the Clemson Tigers at Sun Life Stadium on Jan. 4, and the team is excited to be there as Scott Grayson of West Virginia Illustrated reports.

"It's pretty festive," says Head Coach Dana Holgorsen. "It's pretty exciting and we look forward to going to the Fontainebleau to get settled in and enjoy a week's worth of festivities but also understand that we are down here to win a football game."

"Everyone's excited," says Offensive Lineman Don Barclay. "Everyone was looking out the window (of the plane) seeing all of the oranges and everything. This is a great atmosphere, the weather is nice and everyone's pumped to get this game on."

This year's Orange Bowl represents the third different BCS game the Mountaineers have appeared in the last seven seasons. In the 2005 season, West Virginia topped Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and followed that up with a Fiesta Bowl victory after the 2007 season.

Orange Bowl 2012: West Virginia Preparing For Clemson's Playmakers

When West Virginia faces Clemson in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 4, the Tigers will deploy weapons all over the place on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Tajh Boyd completed 60.5 percent of his passes this season for 3,578 yards and 31 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions, making him one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Running back Andre Ellington eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark with 1,062 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

To top it off, wide receiver Sammy Watkins put up huge numbers, too, catching 77 passes for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Needless to say, the Mountaineers coaching staff is putting in some extra work in preparation for the game, as the Associated Press reports.

"You don’t have to watch a whole lot of film to understand they’ve got playmakers all over the place," said West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "Obviously, they’re very, very talented — and deep — and they’re guys that can run. We’ll have our work cut out for us. That’s the bad thing. Sometimes it can ruin your holidays getting ready for these type of games. It’s going to be a challenge trying to defend them."

One way to stop the Tigers might be forcing Boyd to turn the ball over. Five of his 10 picks came in Clemson's three losses this season. If the Mountaineers can have that kind of success, it should invigorate their defense and help the offense out with field position, too, putting West Virginia in good position to take down the ACC champs.

Orange Bowl 2012 Odds: Clemson An Early Favorite Over West Virginia

The Clemson Tigers will face off against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2012 Orange Bowl this game, and the two teams figure to be pretty evenly matched. Both of these teams are not playing as well currently as they were in the beginning of the Season, but the oddsmakers think that Clemson is just a little bit better than the  Mountaineers at this point, according to SB Nation.

Even though they lost three of their final five games, Clemson open as a 3 1/2 point favorite over WVU. Clemson likely would not have been favored against just about any other possible opponent, but WVU's two Big East losses give the Tigers the edge in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

Perhaps their last wins of the season helped shape that opinion. Clemson dispatched a highly ranked Virginia Tech team while West Virginia struggled against South Florida with their season on the line.
