A pair of former NFL coaches are helping prospects prepare for the 2012 East-West Shrine Game, set to kickoff on Saturday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
The Associated Press writes that former San Diego Chargers and Detroit Lions coach Bobby Ross and former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress are trying to help college players looking to break into the NFL learn more professional offenses than they might have experienced at the college level.
The coaches had this to say.
"Some of these guys have worked in offenses that don’t necessarily translate to what they’ll be doing in the NFL. ... I’m a coach who believes in the players making the system, not the system making the player. The talent is going to shine through," Ross said.
...
"This also is a great place to see who can take in a lot of new information and transfer it quickly to the field. That’s one quality everyone is watching," the former Minnesota Vikings coach said. "We’re limited by formation, but we’re not limited by volume. So you throw it all at them and see what sticks."

Practices for the 2012 East-West Shrine Game began on Monday in St. Petersburg and with gameday fast approaching, CBS Sports is previewing each game. On Monday, the website's Dane Brugler named Arkansas wide receiver Jarius Wright the top prospect in the Shrine Game, set to take place on Saturday at Tropicana Field, and had the following to say about him.
Wright is a savvy route runner and knows how to get open, selling routes beautifully. He competes for every pass and has elite body control and focus to adjust his frame mid-air and snatch the pass with his reliable hands. Wright has marginal bulk with a smallish frame and his lack of strength is exposed against physical cornerbacks, but he has the quick-twitch burst to redirect in any direction and shows an extra gear downfield. Wright is one of the top slot or "Y" receivers in this draft class because of his ability to manipulate the middle of the field and use his natural feel to find soft spots in coverage.
Wright had 66 receptions for 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns during the 2011 season. The senior went for 100 or more receiving yards four times and broke out for 13 catches, 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 42-38 win against Texas A&M on Oct. 1. Wright finished his Razorbacks career with 168 catches for 2,934 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The 2012 East West Shrine Game is a good place for some college players who had disappointing seasons can impress some NFL scouts before heading to the 2012 NFL Draft. One player that could do that very thing is Florida Gators quarterback John Brantley. Brantley had a very disappointing two seasons starting for the Gators, but Wes Bunting of the National Football Post thinks Brantley can really help himself this week.
QB John Brantley: Florida (6-3, 219)
Does a lot of things well, but doesn't always trust what he sees. Needs some time, but is worth a developmental grade and late round/priority pick.
It could also go south for Brantley as well if he struggles in the game against lower level competition.
