2012 NHL All-Star Game: Steven Stamkos Fails To Score, But Adds An Assist For Team Alfredsson

The Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos had an impressive weekend in Ottawa, lighting up the NHL Skills Competition and then playing a crucial role for Team Alfredsson in Sunday afternoon's game. The NHL's leading goal scorer failed to get in on the scoring action, however, as Team Chara went on to a 12-9 win over Team Alfredsson. Stamkos saw just over 13 minutes of ice time, and added a point with a secondary assist on a Jason Pominville goal in the second period.

In the first, he was granted a penalty shot after Dion Phaneuf tripped him on a breakaway chance. Stamkos went to the ground but still managed to control the puck and get a shot on Jimmy Howard. On the penalty shot, Stamkos tried to duplicate the success of the spin move he put on Carey Price during Saturday night's elimination shootout. This time he kept the puck on his backhand instead of pulling it through to the forehand. Howard was there to stuff the shot and keep Stamkos off the board.

Despite the scoreless night, the Lightning's All-Star represented the organization well all weekend. Marian Gaborik of the New York Rangers and Team Chara was named MVP.

NHL All Star Game 2012: Steven Stamkos Will Play With Claude Giroux, Logan Couture For Team Alfredsson

The Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos has had quite the weekend so far in Ottawa. The NHL's leading goal scorer was selected in the seventh round of the fantasy draft on Thursday night by Daniel Alfredsson. Stamkos then led Team Alfredsson to a convincing Skills Competition victory on Saturday night, as he was the last man standing in the elimination shootout challenge. On Sunday, the All-Star Game finally arrives and Stamkos will look to continue his show in front of the entire league.

It was announced that he will start on a line with the San Jose Sharks' Logan Couture and Philadelphia Flyers' Claude Giroux.

Via @TBLightning:

While Stamkos leads the league in goals, Giroux is second only to Evgeni Malkin in points and among the league's top five assist men. The Lightning star should have plenty of opportunities to continue the show on Sunday in what is typically an offensively explosive game.

2012 NHL All-Star Skills Competition: Florida's Brian Campbell To Take Part In Two Events

Now that the rosters have been chosen by captains Zdeno Chara and Daniel Alfredsson, the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend can begin in earnest on the ice with Saturday's Skills Competition. The Florida Panthers' lone all-star, defenseman Brian Campbell, was selected by Team Chara and will participate in two events Saturday evening, Fastest Skater and Accuracy Shooting. Fastest Skater is just as you might imagine, a competition to see who is the quickest skater on the ice. Campbell's teammates and competition in that event:

Team Alfredsson: Kris Letang (backwards), Jonathan Quick (goalie), Carl Hagelin (rookie), Keith Yandle, Erik Karlsson

Team Chara: Jimmy Howard (goalie), Colin Greening (rookie), Phil Kessel, Marian Hossa

In the Accuracy Shooting event, four foam targets are placed in the four corners of the goal, and players try to hit each target in the fastest time possible. The participants:

Team Alfredsson: Matt Read (rookie), Jason Spezza, Steven Stamkos, Daniel Sedin. Passing to that quartet will be Alexander Edler, Dan Girardi, Claude Giroux and Henrik Sedin

Team Chara: Cody Hodgson (rookie), Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Marian Hossa. Passing to that quarter will be Phil Kessel, Ryan Suter, Jordan Eberle.

A quick rundown of the other events:

Breakaway Challenge: A goalie and three shooters from each team participate, as players attempt three shots, looking to score a goal in the most impressive way possible. Judges vote on the goal-scoring attempts.

Skills Challenge Relay: This event consists of four separate relays, with each replay involving: one timers, passing, puck control relay, stick handling, and shooting accuracy. Players cannot move on to the next skill until the previous one is completed.

Hardest Shot: The player who shoots the puck the hardest, measured in MPH, wins. Captain Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins has won this event four years in a row.

Elimination Shootout: The basics of the game: players attempt to score a goal against the goaltender and move on to the next round.

2012 NHL All Star Fantasy Draft: Steven Stamkos Goes In Seventh Round To Team Alfredsson

Steven Stamkos was taken in the seventh round of the NHL's All Star Fantasy Draft in Ottawa on Thursday night. Daniel Alfredsson and co-captain Henrik Lundqvist took Stamkos with their seventh overall pick. He is the only NHL player currently on pace to score fifty goals. Even among the best players in the world, it was surprising to see him fall that far.

For the complete draft results, please check out the SB Nation's NHL All-Star game StoryStream.

Stamkos was originally the number one overall pick in 2008. He joins Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, and Claude Giroux as fellow forwards on the Alfredsson team so far. It's been a good start to the All Star weekend.
