2012 NCAA Tournament: Reaction To Florida's Run To Elite 8

The Florida Gators reached their second straight Elite 8 on Thursday, beating Marquette. Our Florida blog Alligator Army is pretty impressed with their run so far, and don't see it ending on Saturday.

Florida's playing very, very well, but it's not playing the brand of basketball we had grown accustomed to seeing the Gators play. These Gators gnash their teeth and run, scrap for rebounds, play defense like they value almost every possession, and have cut down on the lapses and silly errors and bad shots — and few of their good shots are even falling. There's significant room above the current water level here, and, after feeling like Florida had tapped its potential, I have seen the Gators play much better — but I still think Florida hasn't put it all together, and still believe the Gators are legitimate national championship contenders as is.

The Gators made it this far last year, and the seniors on the team might still have a bad taste in their mouth from that experience. But they'll have to face a tough Louisville squad on Saturday to make the Final Four, and that will be a difficult test.

NCAA Tournament 2012, Florida Vs. Marquette: Gators Advance To The Elite 8

The Florida Gators advanced to the Elite 8 on Thursday night with a 68-58 win over Marquette in Phoenix. They will face Louisville, who defeated No. 1 seed Michigan State, in the West Region finals on Saturday. The Gators led by as many as 13 points with less than five minutes to play, but a 7-0 Marquette run made the Florida lead as little as five in the final two minutes. But a huge three-pointer by Erving Walker, and a crucial rebound and put-back by Patric Young, ensured the Gators win and quickly stopped the threat from Marquette.

Freshman phenom Bradley Beal had another fantastic game, leading the Gators with 21 points. Beal is on fire lately and he hit eight of ten shots from the floor against the Golden Eagles, including three of five from behind the arc. Beal also grabbed six boards and dished four assists. Highlights of his impressive performance below:

Billy Donovan will now go up against his former coach and mentor, Rick Pitino, for the right to go to the Final Four.

NCAA Tournament 2012, Florida Vs. Marquette Score: Gators Go On Run To End First Half With 6-Point Lead

After one half of their Sweet 16 matchup in the West Region, the No. 7 seed Florida Gators lead the No. 3 seed Marquette Golden Eagles, 36-30. The Florida Gators went on a 9-0 run over the final four minutes of the half to take the six-point lead into the locker room. Florida got some good looks in the first half but hit just four of 14 from behind the arc, as the three-pointers started to fall when they went on their run to close the half.

Brad Beal is the only player for Billy Donovan's club in double figures, scoring ten points and hitting two of three attempts from three-point range. Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker each added six points a piece. Marquette was led by Darius Johnson-Odom who hit two three-pointers and had eight points. Florida will look to carry over the momentum from the final four minutes into the second half to move on to the Elite 8.
