The Tampa Bay Rays fought off a furious comeback attempt by the Baltimore Orioles to salvage the series finale, 9-8.
The Rays jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings, bouncing Orioles starter Jake Arrieta after just 3.2 innings. Tampa added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, however again the O's fought back with a run in the eighth and ninth before the Rays finally shut the door.
Ben Zobrist was a big reason for the victory, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Elliot Johnson also added his second home run of the season. Rays starter James Shields had a good start tainted by rough sixth and seventh innings. His final line for the day was six runs (four earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
The Rays will now travel to Toronto to begin a series with the Blue Jays Monday night.

This weekend at Camden Yards, the Tampa Bay Rays (20-14) have discovered what all of baseball is just figuring out: the 2012 Baltimore Orioles (22-12) are legit. In a weekend series that was a battle for AL East supremacy, Baltimore has taken the first two games from Tampa Bay and looks for the sweep on Sunday.
The Rays will send Big Game James Shields (5-1, 3.23 ERA) to the mound, looking to steal one victory in the series and stop a three-game slide by Joe Maddon's club. In 10 career starts at Camden Yards, the righty is 5-1 with a 3.44.
Baltimore will counter with Jake Arrieta (2-3, 4.23 ERA). Arrieta defeated Tampa Bay twice last season, but has struggled mightily in his last three home starts, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays (20-14) entered the weekend tied with the Baltimore Orioles (22-12) for first place in the A.L.East. Two days later, they find themselves two game out following a 5-3 loss to the first-place O's on Saturday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Tampa Bay lost, 4-3 on Friday.
Starting pitcher Matt Moore struggled at the onset, surrendering four earned runs and four walks over four and one-third inning and Baltimore led 4-1 after five as a result.
A single from Luke Scott in the sixth would score two runs, to narrow the margin, but the Rays could never score quite enough.

The Tampa Bay Rays dropped Game 1 of their best-of-three weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles yesterday by a final score of 4-3. Tampa will look to bounce back tonight and try and even things up and one game apiece.
For the Rays, Matt Moore will get be the probable starter on the hill and look to get to .500 on the season. His current ERA is 1.64.
For the Orioles, Brian Matusz, who has struggled all season and is 1-4 on the year, will take the mound and try to earn just his second victory of the season.

The Tampa Bay Rays dropped their weekend series opener in Baltimore on Friday night, dropping a game behind the Orioles in the AL East standings. The Rays simply could not string together a rally and break through against Baltimore starter Dana Eveland. The Rays got five hits and drew six walks off of Eveland but failed to pounce and managed just three runs -- one of which came on a Sean Rodriguez double play and the other on a hit-by-pitch.
Tampa starter Jeremy Hellickson was solid for Joe Maddon, striking out six in 6.2 innings pitcher. But unlike the Rays, the O's got produced by depositing the homers into the Camden Yards seats for and efficient four runs. Adam Jones and Nick Markakis hit solo shots to put the O's down 3-2, and then Nick Johnson came through with a two-run shot that delivered the 4-3 win. Johnson was the first batter after Hellickson was pulled, and Joel Peralta promptly gave up the go-ahead homer.
Tampa will look to pull back into a tie for first on Saturday. Game 2 of the series will feature Matt Moore on the mound for Tampa, while Baltimore will counter with Brian Matusz.
