To say that the 2012 Indianapolis 500 which ran Sunday afternoon was exciting was an understatement. Take for example the final lap which featured a crash by a desperate Takuma Sato in a last ditch effort to gain the lead and, of course, Dario Franchitti capturing the checkered flag.
In the post race discussion, Sato claims that Franchitti "crowded him" at the turn, causing him to crash. Franchitti has proclaimed himself innocent of any wrongdoing in the crash.
After winning the race, Franchitti gave a simple remembrance of Dan Wheldon by donning Wheldon's trademark white sunglasses in the winner's circle. Wheldon was killed in a in an October crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In what was one of the wildest Indy 500s ever that featured over 30 lead changes, Dario Franchitti emerged from the mad scramble in the final laps to win his third career Indy 500.
After Marco Andretti's wreck in the final laps, it set up a six lap shootout for the finish. While Franchitti held the lead for the final laps, the victory did not come without competition. Japanese driver Takuma Sato made a desperate attempt to take the lead during the final lap, but he wrecked while trying to overtake Franchitti.
This is the third time that Franchitti will kiss the bricks, as he has won previously in 2007 and 2010.

Florida resident Ryan Hunter-Reay saw his 2012 Indy 500 come to a disappointing finish at Lap 125 when a mechanical failure caused him to drop out of the race.
Hunter-Reay began the day in third place, falling back to as far as fourteenth, before making another move toward the front of the pack before the suspension in his car thwarted his comeback attempt.
His official final standing in the race is 27th place, far from his career best of sixth in his rookie race in 2008.
Takuma Sato has emerged during the second half of the race to take control of the lead. He has Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Marco Andretti hot on his trail.

The 2012 Indianapolis 500 has reached its midway point, and there is still not a clear frontrunner in the race. Marco Andretti has been the lead racer for most of the afternoon, but currently sits in 11th after hitting the pits during a caution.
After a slow start, Ryan Hunter-Reay has fought all the way back to his starting position of third place after falling back to as far as 14th.
The first big crash of the day came when Mike Conway crashed into Will Power on Lap 82. In the aftermath, one of the tires from a car involved was let loose on the track, and nearly took out Helio Castroneves.

The 2012 Indy 500 has been a wild one through the first quarter of the race, as the lead has changed hands over 10 times in the first 50 laps.
Florida resident Ryan Hunter-Reay started out fourth but currently sits in 11th after taking a pit stop at lap 45.
The lead has changed on a lap-by-lap basis as no driver has been able to separate themselves from the field, however Marco Andreti leads all drivers in laps in the top spot. After starting out in the Pole, Ryan Briscoe has fallen out of the lead but currently sits in fourth.
There has been one caution, as Bryan Clauson blew a tire and spun out. He is now 19 laps behind the pace. Jean Alesi and Silmona de Silvestro saw their days come to an early end for not meeting the 105 rule which states that drivers must be withing 105 percent of the best driver's time.

Records are made almost annually at the Indianapolis 500. In fact, any time speed gets factored into a sporting event, it becomes hard to avoid talk of records. This year's Indy 500 could have another record, albeit one fans and drivers could probably stand to do without. The weather forecast calls for intense heat, and high temperatures are now expected to climb well into the 90s.
The Weather Channel reports that a dome of high pressure is creeping into the Ohio Valley, and it should settle over Indianapolis this weekend. The record high for the race is 92, recorded in 1937. The last time the high temperature at the race hit 90 or better was in 1978.
Blistering heat can have an impact on the drivers and their cars. Reduced traction, less efficient engines and melting drivers can all impact the outcome of the race.

Ryan Briscoe pulled off a mild upset over the weekend, beating out Marco Andretti to secure the pole position for the Indianapolis 500. The Team Penske driver recorded an average speed of 226.484 mph in Saturday's run for the pole.
It was the 11th time in Briscoe's racing career that he earned the pole position for an Indy Car race. He has six wins, and his best finish in the points standings came in 2009, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Briscoe will be looking to be the fifth pole winning in the last 10 Indy 500 races to turn his advantage into a first-place finish in the big race.
With a Chevrolet engine in his car, Briscoe is part of an impressive showing at Indy for Chevy. This is Chevrolet's first year in the Indy car engine business since 2005. Eight of the top nine qualifiers sported Chevy engines in their cars. Chevy engines have won all four of the Indy car races this season along with all five pole positions.

The usual suspense of drivers fighting for the last remaining spots in the Indianapolis 500 was absent from 2012 "Bump Day", as all 33 racers have qualified for the field. The only thing at stake was positioning and more practice in anticipation of the race on May 27.
Here is the results of the day's qualifying along with the drivers' top speeds.

26. Wade Cunningham, 223.258 mph
27. Oriol Servia, 222.393 mph

29. Mike Conway, 222.319 mph
