ACC Baseball Tournament 2012: Georgia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina And NC State All In Contention

With No.1 seed and favorite Florida State out of contention for the ACC baseball tournament championship, the postseason title is up for grabs on Saturday when Georgia Tech takes on Clemson and North Carolina goes up against NC State.

The Seminoles were eliminated on Friday after a come-from-behind walk-off victory by Clemson to defeat the regular season champion, and what many believed to be the top college baseball squad in the nation coming into the tournament.

The North Carolina schools are finalists in Pool B and the winner of that match-up will face the winner of Georgia Tech and Clemson, the finalists in Pool A, on Sunday for ACC baseball supremacy.

Georgia Tech and Clemson, both lower seeds with the Yellow Jackets at No. 8 and Clemson at No. 5, each managed to take down the Noles in the tournament to find themselves pitted against each other for a shot at the title.

ACC Baseball Tournament 2012 Final Score: Clemson Walk-Off Home Run Defeats Florida State, 9-7

The Florida State Seminoles looked as though they would outlast the Clemson Tigers on Friday in the ACC baseball tournament after suffering a 5-4 loss to Georgia Tech in their first game of the tournament. But Clemson had different plans for the No. 1-seed Seminoles.

A two-run walk-off home run to right field by sophomore first baseman Jon McGibbon gave the Tigers the 9-7 comeback win against what many believed to be the best team in the country when the regular season ended.

Clemson led against Florida State early, starting in the second inning when senior Jason Stoltz scored an unearned run on a Florida State throwing error after reaching base on a walk and stealing second.

Florida State came back at Clemson with a four-run third inning, sparked by an RBI double to left field from Devon Travis to score Jose Brizuela. Travis was then plated by an RBI single to center field by James Ramsey, which gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead.

Shortstop Justin Gonzales hit the other RBI in the third inning, while first baseman Jayce Boyd scored on a balk.

Clemson answered with runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but it still didn't seem like quite enough to withstand Florida State, which scored again in the fifth, then another pair of runs in the eighth inning. But the Tigers scored a pair of runs of their own in the eighth, then McGibbon's blast in ninth was the death of the Noles.

ACC Baseball Tournament Final: Florida State Drops First Game To Georgia Tech, 5-4

The Florida State Seminoles had a slow start to their first game of the ACC tournament against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and it cost them. After falling behind five runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Seminoles could not complete a comeback and lost their first game of the tournament, 5-4 on Wednesday.

A pair of two-run home runs by Georgia Tech first baseman Jake Davies gave the Yellow Jackets the majority of their runs which proved to be the difference, despite the Seminoles scoring four unanswered runs, including a solo home run by centerfielder James Ramsey in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Florida State starting pitcher Scott Sitz got the brunt of the Georgia Tech offense, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts over four and two-thirds innings. Relief pitcher Brian Busch allowed the second Davies home run and was only credited with allowing one run over one-third inning pitched.

The Seminoles take Thursday off and resume play on Friday afternoon as they play the Clemson Tigers at 3 p.m. The Yellow Jackets also resume play on Friday, as they face the Virginia Cavaliers at 10 a.m.
