The opening round of the 2012 Sun Belt baseball tournament kicked off on Wednesday as No. 1 seeded Florida Atlantic took on No. 8 seeded Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Florida Atlantic battled back a few innings later and took the lead thanks to a three-run third inning. FAU third baseman Kyle Newton doubled in the third, driving in two runs to tie the game. On the very next at bat, first baseman Mark Nelson singled to drive in a run and take the 3-2 lead.
Those three runs were all that the Owls needed to hold on and take out Western Kentucky and pick up a win in the opening round.
