Pool play for No. 6-seeded Miami (Fl.) continues, and the Hurricanes finally notched one for the win column, defeating No. 2-seeded North Carolina by a final score of 5-3 to improve to 1-1 during the ACC Tournament. Miami is among four schools in Pool B with the winner set to face the team with the best record from Pool A in the conference title game on Saturday.
The Hurricanes got a strong outing from starting pitcher Steven Ewing, who allowed just two runs over eight innings, striking out four.
The junior, though, got a boost in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game tied at three, center fielder Dale Carey homered to left field, to give Miami a 5-3 lead it wouldn't relinquish. Closer AJ Salcines would later come in for the final inning, where he struck out three batters to record the save.
