In her first Grand Slam match since announcing her diagnosis with an autoimmune disorder, Venus Williams was able to pick up a win in the first round of the 2012 French Open at Roland Garros over Argentina's Paula Ormaecha.
After Ormaecha won the first set, 4-6, but Venus then took control, winning the last two sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Williams is now 12-4 in 2012.
Venus now has a tall task ahead of her, as she will most likely take on third-seeded Pole Agnieska Radwanska in the second round.
On the men's side, Andy Roddick had yet another disappointing showing in a major, as he was eliminated in the first round by Nicolas Mahut of France, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Roddick is now a lackluster 7-10 in 2012, including an 0-4 mark on clay courts.
