The Central Florida baseball season came to an end on Monday night, as the Knights dropped an elimination game in the regional finals to Stony Brook. After the Seawolves cruised to a 12-5 win on Sunday, they backed it up again on Monday with a 10-4 victory to move on to the first Super Regional in the school's history. This marks the third time in the past 13 years that UCF has gone into the Regional final undefeated and been unable to advance with a win. They still seek their first Super Regional appearance in program history.
The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but starter Brian Adkins could not hold the lead. Adkins gave up four earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, as the Seawolves blew it open with a five-run fourth inning and would never look back. William Carmona, who absolutely raked all weekend, went four for five for Stony Brook and brought home three. His night included a two-RBI double during the fourth-inning rally that ignited the Seawolves and sent the Knights home packing.

The UCF Knights fell hard to the Stony Brook Sea Wolves in the Coral Gables Regional by a final score of 12-5.
For UCF, Darnell Sweeney, Alex Friedrich, D.J. Hicks and Travis Shreve each contributed an RBI for the Knights, but it wouldn't be enough to withstand the hot bats of Stony Brook. Eric Skoglund gets credited with the loss for UCF as he went three and one thirds on the mound and gave up seven hits and three earned runs. Pitcher Bryan Brown didn't fare any better as he got the start and in his three and two thirds innings of work, gave up six hits and four earned runs.
On the Stony Brook side, Maxx Tissenbaum and Tanner Nivins each had two RBI's while Pat Cantwell, William Carmona, Kevin Krause, Sal Intagliata and Kevin Courtney each contributed an RBI apiece.
Jasvir Rakkar was the winning pitcher as he went six full innings and gave up seven hits, four earned runs and striking out six batters. Joshua Mason was credited with the save for the Sea Wolves.

Saturday's NCAA regional contest between No. 2 seeded-UCF and Stony Brook certainly had a fair bit of offense. The Knights and Seawolves combined for 17 runs on 17 runs in a back-and-forth affair in Coral Gables, Fla. But in the end, UCF prevailed by a final score of 9-8 to to face Missouri State in the regional title game. The Bears eliminated host Miami (Fl.) earlier in the day, 12-2.
For the Knights, they were led by shortstop Darnell Sweeney and designated hitter Jeramy Matos, who combined for six runs on three runs.
Redshirt junior Chris Matulis was credited with the win for UCF after pitching five innings in relief, though allowing four earned runs over that span. Joe Rodgers, who came in during the eighth inning recorded the save for the Knights.

Following a pair of home runs from right fielder Preston Tucker and catcher Mike Zunino, the Florida Gators upended Georgia Tech, 6-2 on Saturday, notching their second win of the weekend set. The Gators will face either the Yellow Jackets or Charleston tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the Gainesville Regional title game, a double-elimination format.
Florida did much of its work in the top of the fourth inning on Saturday night following a solo homer from Zunino, along with an RBI single from left fielder Justin Shafer and a sacrifice fly from first baseman Vickash Ramjit, giving it a 4-1 lead midway through the contest.
Gators starter Hudson Randall also kept them in the game. Though surrendering eight hits, he gave up just one walk and on earned run over nearly six innings before reliever Steven Rodriguez came in to finish the game.

Samford, the No. 3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, surprised quite a number of fans on Friday with a 5-0 victory over No. 2-seeded Mississippi State. One day later, it ran into a bit of trouble against the region's top seed, Florida State. The Seminoles amassed nine hits en route to a decisive 8-1 win over the Bulldogs, clearing the way to play in Sunday's regional title game.
Florida State defeated UAB 2-1 in its first game of the regional on Friday.
On Saturday, it not only relied on a three-run sixth inning and a four-run seventh inning, but it also got a bit of a lift from freshman starter Brandon Leibrandt, who struck out 10 batters over eight scoreless innings. The Georgia allowed just three hits and no walks to grab the win.
Samford's lone run came in the ninth inning off senior reliever Hunter Scantling, who came in for Leibrandt.

The Miami Hurricanes were eliminated from the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament with a 12-2 loss to the Missouri State Bears on Saturday. The Bears used a seven-run first inning to put the Hurricanes at bay, early. Canes starting pitcher Steven Ewing lasted just two outs before being pulled, giving up six earned runs off six hits and two walks. The Bears tacked on two runs in the second inning, and added three in the sixth to cap their scoring.

The Florida State Seminoles opened up on Friday night in their opening game of the Tallahassee Regional with a 2-1 win over UAB. In typical FSU post-season fashion, the game was much closer than it needed to be and had the Noles sweating in the ninth inning, as UAB had a man on third with two outs. FSU held on to advance, however.
FSU will be taking on a Samford team than took out Mississippi State with a 5-0 victory, shutting out the Bulldogs. Samford got a dominant game from pitcher Charles Basford, who pitched eight shutout innings and picked up the victory. Samford will face a much more stout lineup against Florida State, however.

The Florida Gators got a stellar outing from pitcher Jonathon Crawford, who pitched a no-hitter against the Betune-Cookman Wildcats. Crawford allowed just one baserunner off a walk and completed the first no-hitter for the Gators since 1991. Florida finished up the game with a 4-0 win and advance to the next round in the Gainesville Regional.
Florida will be taking on Georgia Tech, who took out the College of Charleston on Friday with an 8-4 victory. The Cougars jumped out to a first inning lead on the Yellow Jackets, but it didn't take long for Tech to take the lead thanks to a home run by ACC MVP Jake Davies, who ended the game with four RBI.

The Stony Brook Seawolves made a statement on Friday night with their 10-2 blow out win against the Miami Hurricanes, the host team in the Coral Gables Regional. The Seawolves beat up on the Miami pitching staff, especially late in the game plating six runs over the course of the last three innings.
Central Florida on the other hand squeaked past Missouri State with a narrow 2-1 victory on Friday to advance in the regional. The Knights got a good near six innings out of starter Ben Lively who allowed just three hits while on the mound. UCF was able to pull out the victory thanks to a Chris Taladay RBI-single, which turned out to be the game winning run.
Both teams will battle it out to advance in the winners pool for a Sunday night match up to take on the winner of Miami Vs. Missouri State.

The Miami Hurricanes weren't rebound from their loss to Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament last week, opening up play in the Coral Gables Regional on Friday night with a crushing 10-2 loss to Stony Brook in the first round. Miami starter Eric Erickson lasted just five innings and gave up four runs. The Seawolves were also able to score six more runs over the final three innings of the game.
Miami's bats struggled just as much as their pitching did on Friday night, so they'll be looking to stay alive with a matchup against Missouri State who also lost on Friday night. Unlike Miami however, Missouri State lost in a close one to UCF 2-1. Both teams will be looking to avoid elimination on Saturday afternoon.

The Miami Hurricanes suffered a stunning upset on the first day of regionals in Coral Gables on Friday night, losing to the No. 4 seed Stony Brook 10-2. The Canes offense started the 2012 NCAA Tournament scuffling at the plate, and the Seawolves poured it on in the final three innings to cruise to the win. Miami starter Eric Erickson lasted five innings, giving up four runs (two earned). Taking a 4-2 lead into the 7th inning, Stony Brook scored six runs over the final three innings to blow it open. A three-run eighth made it 9-2 and removed all doubt for a dramatic comeback by the No. 1 seed and host school.
Stony Brook starter Tyler Johnson scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings, allowing just two Miami runs in the fourth inning which momentarily tied the game. A Brad Fieger two-run shot to left was the only damage done by the 'Canes lineup. They will look to rebound on Saturday in an elimination game against Missouri State.

The No. 1 overall seed in the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament opened the postseason in impressive fashion on Friday night. The Florida Gators defeated Bethune-Cookman 4-0 on a dominant pitching performance by Jonathon Crawford, who pitched a no-hitter against the overmatched Wildcats. Crawford allowed only one baserunner, a walk in the top of the third inning. It's the first no-hitter for the Gators since 1991 when John Burke tossed a no-no against Furman in the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore struck out five as he cruised in a 98-pitch outing to open the regional round with a win.
On the offensive side for the Gators, it was all Casey Turgeon. The second baseman drove in all four runs, even though all Crawford needed was the RBI single in the second which brought home Daniel Pigott. Turgeon added to his big night in the bottom of the 5th when he launched a three-run homer to left.
Florida now faces the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville regional, Georgia Tech, on Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET.

The Florida State Seminoles opened the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament with a narrow 2-1 win over UAB at home in Dick Howser Stadium. After the Blazers tied things up at 1-1 in the top of the 5th, FSU answered quickly to jump out in front by a run, a lead they would not relinquish thanks to the fabulous work of the bullpen. Gage Smith got the win, going 3.2 innings out of the pen and allowing just three hits during a scoreless appearance. Robert Benincasa came on in the ninth and slammed the door to convert the save and the opening win at regionals.
UAB starter Michael Busby was fantastic, but FSU managed to manufacture just enough. The No. 3 hitter James Ramsey came through in the clutch for the 'Noles, knocking in each run. He put FSU ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third when he singled home Sherman Johnson with a ball through the right side on an 0-2 offering from Busby. Johnson scored again in the fifth after drawing another walk, and Ramsey was there to double him home for the game-winning run.
FSU will now face Samford on Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET.

PItching ruled the day in the Central Florida Knight's 2-1 victory over the Missouri State Grizzlies Friday afternoon in the Coral Gables, Fla.
Ben Lively threw 5.2 innings of scoreless, three-hit ball for UCF while Missouri State's Nick Petree threw a complete game in a losing effort, allowing two runs on six hits to pick up the tough loss.
UCF got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first, as Ronnie Richardson's home run gave the Knights a 1-0 lead. The score would remain that way until the top of the seventh, when Kevin Medrano singled off of reliever Roman Madrid to score Dylan Becker to even the score at 1-1. In the top of the eighth, Richardson started a rally again with a lead-off single. He would later score on Chris Taladay's clutch RBI single.
After a rain delay before the start of the top of the ninth put a hold to the Knights finishing off the victory, Chris Matulis came on to pick up the save.

Using some big innings early, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were able to down the College of Charleston Cougars 8-4 in the first game of the Gainesville Regional Friday afternoon.
The Cougars kept the pressure on the Yellow Jackets early, scoring a run in the top of the first and two in the top of the second, however GT responded each time with big innings, scoring three in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second.
After taking over in the fourth inning for starter Cole Pitts, Georgia Tech pitcher Dusty Issacs was the difference, going the remaining 5.1 innings while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Yellow Jacket left fielder Brandon Thomas had a tremendous day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
For College of Charleston, Christian Powell was saddled with the loss, allowing all eight runs (with only four earned) in 3.1 innings.

Two Bulldogs teams came into their game Friday in the Tallahassee Regional wanting to get a win to give them at least two more games in their season. The No.3 seed Samford Bulldogs, buoyed by a four-run eighth inning, defeated the No. 2 seed Mississippi State Bulldogs 5-0 on Friday.
Samford starting pitcher Charles Bedford pitched a gem, going eight innings and allowing only five hits. Samford took the lead in the top of the second inning off a solo home run by right fielder Brandon Miller. The game then went scoreless until the eighth inning when three Samford players hit home runs.
First baseman Saxon Butler and left fielder Christiaan Durdaller hit solo home runs while designated hitter C.K. Irby hit a two-run shot. Irby pitched the ninth inning to preserve the Samford shut out.
Both teams now await the result of Friday night's game between the No. 4 seed UAB Blazers and the host and No. 1 seed Florida State Seminoles to see what the next matchup will be.

Five days after suffering an upset at the hands of Georgia Tech, the Miami Hurricanes return to the diamond on Friday to open their NCAA Tournament campaign. Even though they came up short of an ACC Tournament title, they still earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament and the right to host their regional in Coral Gables. They start things off against the No. 4 seed Stony Brook, who won their spot by winning the America East tournament.
The 'Canes are led offensively by Peter O'Brien, who posted a 1.107 OPS during the season. With 10 home runs in just 38 games, he's a big power hitting threat. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, he's the only guy who has the ability to go yard at any time, but guys around him in the order get on base frequently. O'Brien did niss a significant chunk of time through injury this year, and might not be 100 percent, but he is expected to play.
Eric Erickson should get the nod for the Hurricanes on the mound, but their starting rotation goes three-deep with quality pitchers, so there's not much of a drop-off if Jim Baker decides to save Erickson for the second game of the regional.

The UCF Knights start baseball's second season on Friday afternoon in South Florida, facing Missouri State at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables. The No. 2 seeded Knights are the best bet to challenge the host Hurricanes, returning to Regionals for the second year in a row and looking to build on the experience from last season. PerfectGame.org has called the Coral Gables regional the toughest in the Tournament, with all four teams possessing quality RPI rankings.
UCF will open regional play with the sophomore fireballer, Ben Lively on the mound. But they'll be facing the best team pitching staff ERA in the country in Missouri State. Nick Petree, who enters with a 0.93 ERA will go for the Bears. A win would likely put them on a collision course with Miami, who faces Stony Brook in the second game of the day.

In last year's NCAA Baseball tournament, the Florida Gators rolled through their competition, only to get swept by South Carolina in the championship series of the College World Series. This year, all of last season's star sophomores return as juniors, making Florida one of the clear favorites to win the tournament. They're a No. 1 seed, and they begin their trek towards a title on Friday against Bethune-Cookman in Gainesville.
Poor Bethune-Cookman. They're pretty good. They're always pretty good, actually. They played well in an 8-6 loss to Florida in Gainesville earlier in the year and they won the MEAC tournament, but they were 'rewarded' with a very difficult draw.
Power hitters Mike Zunino and Preston Tucker lead the way for Florida, while Nolan Fontana leads the team in on-base percentage. Jonathan Crawford is expected to take the mound for UF on Friday, and the Gators are one of few teams that has four quality starters available to them, instead of three. Karsten Whitson is a bit of a wildcard because of injuries, but if he's healthy, the Gators will have four very good starters at their disposal.
