U.S. Open 2012 Tee Times And Groupings: Phil Mickelson Looks For 1st Open, Playing With Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson

The 2012 U.S. Open begins Thursday with plenty of storylines created by the USGA's groupings. They're well-known for grouping the most successful and popular players in the game, as well as players who have links in their background stories. The most notable group this year features Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson. All three enter the week with some questions about their game. Tiger is coming off a win, but there's still uncertainty about how his Sean Foley reworked swing will hold up in a major championship test. Woods entered the Masters coming off a win at Bay Hill, but finished his week at Augusta with his worst showing ever there, a T40.

Mickelson, meanwhile, enters looking to finally capture the "white whale" of his incredibly successful career. He has finished as a runner-up five times at the national championship, and an Open title is his top outstanding priority. Lefty has had a busy month, playing three out of four weeks in May before withdrawing from the Memorial. Bubba, on the other hand, has only played twice since winning the season's first major. He looked rusty in Columbus two weeks ago.

Mike Davis will have the Lake Course playing firm and fast, but fair. It's often considered the hardest test in the U.S. Open rota, which includes the most challenging setups in the world. The USGA is once again pushing tee times back on the west coast so that the tournament will be featured in primetime in the east. This has been a successful format, initiated at Torrey Pines in 2008 and used again at Pebble Beach in 2010. A complete list of tee times below:
