Team USA Basketball: LeBron James Projects To Be Starting Power Forward

Team USA is talented, but not very big. With the NBA's best big men either too old or too banged up to play in the 2012 Olympics, the only American true center is Tyson Chandler, and as Tom Ziller notes, LeBron James projects to be the team's starting power forward for the entire tournament.

That's why Ziller wrote about Anthony Davis' time for the spotlight being now. The team could actually use him. Davis didn't play at all in that warm up game against Brazil, but one would have to think he'll see critical minutes when the gold is on the line.

This, from Ziller:

Because of Griffin's injury, other than Davis, Kevin Love (who can soak big minutes if he rebounds against international competition like he does in the NBA) is the team's only other true big man. Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant are options at power forward in small line-ups, but neither should be playing center except against the smallest of teams (and certainly not against Spain or Brazil). Chandler is known to get dinged up. Because of all of that, there's a real chance that Davis gets a real chance in London.

USA Basketball: Proposed Age Restriction Not Popular Among Current Olympians

In the wake of a rash of injuries to Team USA and with support from league owners, NBA commissioner David Stern has proposed that, following the 2012 London Games, basketball, much like Olympic soccer, should prevent players older than 23 from participating. As a result, players such as the Miami Heat's LeBron James or the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant would be prevented from suiting up for the U.S.

The suggestion, though, hasn't exactly been welcomed with open warms by the current players.

"It's a stupid idea. It should be a [player's] choice," Bryant told the AFP. "The Olympics is really about putting the best athletes out there to compete against the best. From a basketball standpoint, it would lessen the Olympics, absolutely.

"I don't think they really discuss it much with us, we just discuss it like this, we kind of voice our opinions through you guys [media]. We talk about it among ourselves. It's just a dumb idea."

Team USA Vs. Brazil Basketball: LeBron James Dominates 2nd Exhibition Game Against Tough Brazil Squad

Team USA picked up another double-digit win in their second exhibition game in advance of the 2012 London Olympic Games. But unlike the blow out win against the Dominican Republic in Las Vegas, Coach K's team faced a much tougher test on Monday night at Verizon Center in downtown Washington, DC. USA clinched an 80-69 win over Brazil but it certainly wasn't always pretty.

Brazil has one of the better frontcourts in international basketball with Nene, Tiago Splitter, and Anderson Varejao all creating havoc in the paint. Team USA started slowly, with a combination of missed shots and turnovers leading to a double-digit deficit in the first quarter.

USA would work their way back into it and hold a lead for the entire second half, but the Brazilians did not go quietly -- at one point, going on an 8-2 run to cut things to six with under six minutes to play. But there was simply too much talent playing for the gold-medal favorites, and Miami's LeBron James dominated when called upon. James led all scorers with 30 points while also grabbing six rebounds. Kevin Durant, who busted out against the DR in the first exhibition game, added 11 points.

Team USA will now head to the United Kingdom for the third of their five-game exhibition tour. They will play Great Britain on July 19 at Manchester Arena.

Team USA Basketball Vs. Brazil: Schedule, Game Time, TV Coverage And More

Team USA faces Brazil on Monday night, looking to continue developing as a unit and put on a show in their second exhibition game. Schedule and television information is below.

Players going down to injury has seemed to be a theme with Team USA, with Blake Griffin the latest man to go down. The all-star forward suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of the Olympics. Griffin's replacement is No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis, and given that Team USA was able to dominate the Dominican Republic 113-59 in their first exhibition game they should be able to find success without Griffin's contributions.

Monday features two games, with both the men's and women's basketball teams facing Brazil.

Game Time: Women at 5:30 p.m. ET, Men at 8 p.m. ET

Location: Verizon Center, Washington DC

Television Coverage: ESPN2 starting at 5:30 p.m. ET

Team USA Blows Out Dominican Republic In 1st Exhibition Game

The USA men's basketball team made their debut on Thursday night with a rout of the Dominican Republic in an exhibition game in Las Vegas. Team USA cruised in the second half to a 113-59 win as they pulled away in a laugher against the overmatched DR. There were an array of highlights for Team USA as they pushed the pace and set the transition style that they hope to play throughout the month.

Miami's LeBron James was obviously a key part of that transition game, as the world's best player will once again serve as a facilitator for all the talent around him. James played significant time at center with so many frontline players injured and Tyson Chandler in foul trouble, but he also had the ball in his hands and consistently kicked out to the sharpshooters at the arc. Kevin Durant was one of the scorers who James consistently found. The NBA's leading scorer started the game hot from outside, hitting five three-pointers. He led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Andre Iguodala added 18 points on four of six from behind the arc.

James and Team USA will play their next exhibition on Monday night in a mens-women's doubleheader against Brazil. The men will play second game at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and Brazil should present a significantly greater challenge than the Dominicans, with NBA players Nene and Anderson Varejao anchoring the post.

Team USA Vs. Dominican Republic Basketball: Kevin Durant Paces USA To 1st Half Lead

In their first official appearance together against unfriendly competition, the USA men's basketball team built an early lead against the Dominican Republic during the first half of their exhibition in Las Vegas on Thursday night. As they intend to do over the next month, Coach K's club pushed the pace against the Dominicans -- racing up-and-down the floor to take a 50-27 lead after 20 minutes.

Kevin Durant is perhaps the most prolific scorer in the world, and the NBA's scoring champ immediately got to work on Thursday night. Durant took advantage of the closer three-point line and continued his success in international play with 21 points in the first half. Durant broke out during the Worlds two years ago and he could very well be the scoring star this year in London.

Miami's LeBron James will once again be a big facilitator of the world's top talent. James has played a lot of center so far against the DR, with injuries plaguing the frontcourt and Tyson Chandler getting into early foul trouble. James will likely play all five spots on the floor.

Anthony Davis, who had to return to the program at the last minute on Thursday after an injury to Blake Griffin, did not enter the game in the first half.
