London Olympics 2012: Competition Starts July 27

The 2012 Summer Olympics get underway from London on July 27.

The 2012 Summer Olympics get underway next week, with action starting on Friday, July 27. On Saturday, the Olympic committee will start handing out gold medals in a variety of events, and a total of 12 will be awarded that day in events ranging from archery to swimming to weightlifting.

A pair of University of Florida athletes will beging competing in the track and field events, which start on Aug. 3. Kerron Clement will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, and Tony McQuay will compete in the 400-meter. Jenny Simpson of Oviedo, Fl., will be competing in the 1500-meter.

Florida's most famous face in the games this year is tennis star Andy Roddick. The tennis competition starts Saturday, July 28 and runs through Aug. 4.
