After back-to-back gold medals, the United States has repositioned itself as the perennial favorite for Olympic basketball. But a potential age limit might exclude several current Olympians, including LeBron James, from rejoining the team in 2016.
From ABC Chicago:
James said he wouldn't play anymore if the age limit was implemented, even if he was granted an exception, because he wouldn't want to play without his teammates. So there's still a chance the Americans could have the game's best player, who would be 31 in Rio, wearing red, white and blue for a fourth straight Olympics.
As for those teammates, Kobe Bryant has already said he is retiring from international play, while fellow 2008 and 2012 Olympians Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams have not yet committed to anything.
The team's head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, will be calling it a career for international play.

It didn't come easy, but Team USA was able to outlast Spain in the Gold Medal Game in men's basketball, winning 107-100.
Led by Kevin Durant's game-high 30 points, the U.S.'s high-speed offense jumped out to a 35-27 lead, but Spain would fight back, cutting the deficit to 59-58 at the half. After an even third, the score was 83-82 going into the final period. It was there that the clutch shooting from Durant and LeBron James led to the victory by seven points.
For Spain, Pau Gasol gave it his all, as his 24 points gave the U.S. fits down low. Guard Juan-Carlos Navarro also came through with 21 points but it was not enough for Spain.
Helping out Durant for the U.S. was James who scored 19 points while Kobe Bryant added 17 and Chris Paul scored 11.
Immediately following the game, the celebration was on for James.

Team USA has a one point lead over Spain in the gold medal game of the Olympic men's basketball tournament, leading 59-58 at the half. Is this going to be one of those games where Team USA turns a slim halftime lead into a big win in the second half? Or will this be a real test for Lebron James and his team vying for a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics?
Kevin Durant has done most of the damage for Team USA. He has 17 points, hitting seven of eight free throw attempts along with two three-point shots. Kevin Love has nine points off the bench. James and Carmelo Anthony have eight point each.
Juan Carlos Navarro has been the man for Spain, scoring 19 points. He is 4-for-6 on three-point attempts. Pau Gasol is in foul trouble with four already.

For the first time since 1980, the United States was not able to take home the gold medal in the Men's 4x400m relay, as a late surge by the Bahamas led to victory for the small island country.

The United States women's soccer team took to the pitch in a rematch with Japan on Thursday afternoon in London in the gold medal match of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The United States got on the scoreboard early in the game with a goal from Carli Lloyd, who knocked in the goal after a pass from Alex Morgan. It looked like Morgan's initial target was Abby Wambach, who's scored a torrent of goals in the Olympics, but Lloyd swooped in for a header and the score giving the U.S. a 1-0 lead.

Even with the lead, Japan had the United States women's team on the ropes for much of the match as Japan constantly peppered America with shots on goal. Thanks to some defensive plays by captain Christie Rampone and some amazing saves by Hope Solo, the United States was able to hold off Japan for much of the first half of the match.
In the second half, Japan continued to press the United States and found themselves just shy of a few goals once again. The United States was able to pick up another goal and take a 2-0 lead however, thanks to a wonderful effort by Lloyd.
Lloyd took possession of the ball near midfield and worked her way to the box before knocking in a shot from the left side of the goal to the far side. The goal, Lloyd's second of the match, gave the United States a comfortable lead and ended up being just enough to hold on to win the gold medal.
Japan cut into the lead with a Yuki Ogimi goal late, but it wasn't enough as Hope Solo was able to fend of shot after shot as the United States avenged their World Cup loss.

In 2011 a dramatic run to the FIFA World Cup final ended in disappointment for the United States women's soccer team as they lost to Japan in penalty kicks. Just over one year later, though, USA has a shot at redemption against the Japanese in a gold medal match against the team that ended their World Cup hopes.
Goals could be at a premium for the United States, as Japan has allowed just two goals in their five games at the 2012 London Olympics, while posting only six combined goals en route to the gold medal final. By comparison, the American team has scored 14 goals to combat five allowed goals on defense. The only goals allowed by either team came from France and Canada.
With three of the Olympic tournament's top scorers, USA will likely lean most on Abby Wambach for goals against Japan. Defensively, Christie Rampone of Fort Lauderdale, FL, will have the task of stopping a Japan offense that features the 2011 FIFA Best Player of the Year, Homare Sawa. However, after leading the 2011 World Cup in goals, Sawa has yet to record one in the Olympics.
The gold medal match between the two powers is expected to shatter Olympics attendance records. The game will be shown live on NBC Sports Network at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The Team USA men's basketball team now needs three wins to win their second consecutive Olympic gold medal. They start tournament play on Wednesday against the Australian team.
The game is scheduled for a 5:15 EDT p.m. tip off, but that depends on what time the other quarterfinal game between Brazil and Argentina ends. The winner of this game will face the winner of Brazil-Argentina in the semi-finals. Television coverage of this game will be provided by NBC Sports Network.
Team USA enters the tournament round a perfect 5-0 after defeating Argentina on Monday, 126-97. Both Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks lead Team USA in scoring, Durant averaging 18.6 points with 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in pool play. Anthony has averaged 17.4 points and is shooting 60 percent from three-point range.
The Australians went 3-2 in pool play, winning their final three games after losing to both Brazil and Spain to start the Olympics. This culminated in a two-point, buzzer-beater victory over the Russian basketball team on Monday.
The Americans will have to keep an eye on the hero of Australia's win over Russia, Patrick Mills of the San Antonio Spurs. Through pool play, Mills led Australia in scoring with 20.2 points per game. However, the Australians don't have much depth following Mills. This will be a tough team to play against, but Team USA matches up very well against Australia. If the American defense can contain Mills, they should have no problem moving on to the semifinals.

Since finishing in the 12th position at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Alistair Brownlee has had success in several major triathlons and translated that success into a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.
Finishing third was the younger of the two brothers, Jonathan Brownlee who finished with the bronze medal just behind Javier Gomez of Spain who earned the silver medal.
The top finisher for the United States was Hunter Kemper who faded to a 14th place finish despite being just one second behind the leader with just one lap to go during the bike segment of the triathlon. During the run segment, Kemper quickly fell off the pace and fell out of the top 10.
Also representing USA was Manuel Huerta of Miami, FL and Florida Atlantic University who finished all the way back in the 51st spot. Right away Huerta dropped out of the top 50 in the swimming segment and was unable to make up much of the two second lead lost in the water.

Team USA closed the gap in the overall medal count to just one on Monday, trailing China which has 64 overall medals. The USA is two shy in the gold medal count as we wind down the final week of competition. Jen Suhr picked up a gold medal for the USA late on Monday, pulling closer to the Chinese. The Americans typically pick up ground, or pull away, during the host of track-and-field events but Monday was a relatively quiet day. The Americans running in the men's 400m hurdles had an overall disappointing showing, but Michael Tinsley did win a silver medal. Here's a more complete look at the medal count:

At halftime, it looked like Team USA was in for a tight game against Argentina. They took a slim one-point lead into the locker room, leaving fans to wonder. Whatever was said during the break, it worked. They exploded in the second half to beat Argentina and wrap up pool play by a final score of 123-97.
Lebron James and Kevin Durant powered the Americans' big second half. They outscored Argentina in the third quarter by 42-17. Durant finished with 28 points, hitting nine of 12 three-point attempts. James scored 18 points, including seven three-pointers. Four other players finished in double figures.
The win gives Team USA a perfect 5-0 record through the preliminary round at the 2012 Summer Olympics. They take on Australia next as they advance to the quarterfinals.

Team USA's lopsided victory over Nigeria last week has long since faded out of the rear view mirror. At half time of their game against Argentina, the Americans have a slim one-point lead, 60-59, as they finish out pool play at the 2012 London Olympics. Team USA has never surrendered that many points in a half in Olympic play.
Chris Paul leads Team USA with 14 points. Kevin Durant has 11, and Lebron James and Kobe Bryant both have nine. Paul has four three-pointers in five attempts, part of Team USA's 9-22 shooting outside the line.
Manu Ginobili leads Argentina with 16 points, and his team is hitting more than 50 percent of their shots from the field.
Team USA will in all likelihood win the Pool A and get a date with Australia in the quarterfinals. The Americans could see Argentina again in the semifinals, depending on the outcome of Argentina's likely matchup against Brazil.

The United States Women's National Team is one step closer to redemption after their 2011 World Cup finals loss to Japan. On Monday, Team USA beat the Canadians by a final score of 4-3 in the semifinals of the women's soccer event at the 2012 London Olympics.
Alex Morgan scored the winning goal in the final minute of extra time to give Team USA the win. It was the fourth and final time that they came back from behind in what will surely be one of the most memorable soccer matches in Olympic history.
Megan Rapinoe scored the first two goals for the United States, her last one tying the score at 2-2. Abby Wambach tied at 3-3 in the 78th minute. Gassed from a furious second half of play, both teams started the thirty minutes of extra time moving just a little slower, but the pace quickened.
Morgan jumped over a mass of Canadian players in front of the net and bashed a header past goaltender Erin McLeod for game winner in the final minute of play. Team USA will next play Japan in the finals.

Team USA men's basketball wraps up pool play on Monday with a game against Argentina. A win would give LeBron James and his team the No. 1 seed in Group A of the men's basketball tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics and a quarterfinal match against Australia on Wednesday. First, they have to get by Argentina.
Lithuania gave Team USA their closest scare yet, coming within five points of toppling the favorite on Saturday. The win kept them at 5-0.
Argentina has a 4-1 record. Luis Scola and Manu Ginobili lead the team, averaging more than 21 points per game. Argentina and the United State faced off recently in exhibition play in Barcelona, with the US winning 86-80.

After briefly holding the lead in both the overall medal count and the gold medal count over the weekend, the U.S. gave the advantage back Sunday. Americans did take medals in six of Sunday's events (2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze), but China holds the lead in the overall medal category by the slimmest possible margin. The race for gold medals is a fairly tight one as well, as seen in SB Nation's August 5th medal video below.

Sanya Richards-Ross did her part in representing Team USA at the 2012 Olympics, taking home the gold medal in a very exciting women's 400m final.
Richards-Ross, the wife of Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Aaron Ross, finished the race with a time of 49.55 seconds, edging out silver medalist Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain by .15 seconds. Richards-Ross overcame a slow start to take the lead on the final turn and held off some late surges to win the race.
Another American, Dee Dee Trotter was able to finish on the podium, as her time of 49.72 was just good enough to win her the bronze medal, as she just edged out Amantle Montsho of Botswana.

The United States of America is back on top.
After Saturday's contests at the 2012 Olympic Games, American Olympians lead in both gold and overall medal count. Through Saturday's contests, the Americans have captured 54 medals, with 26 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze medals.
Michael Phelps earned another gold medal on Saturday, wrapping up his Olympic career in fitting fashion. Phelps leads all American Olympians with six medals, and is tied with Missy Franklin with four gold medals. Franklin and Allison Schmitt both have five medals.
China is right on the United States' heels, though. The Chinese have captured 53 medals, just one behind the Americans. Chinese Olympians have 25 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze medals, and are clearly the United States' only competition in gold and overall medal count.
Great Britain is in third place, with 14 gold and 29 overall medals. Russia and Japan round out the top five, with 28 and 24 medals, respectively.

Michael Phelps is swimming off into the sunset. In his last Olympic swimming race of his career, Phelps and the United States took home the gold medal in the 400m individual medley, providing a fitting exclamation point to end Phelps' storied Olympic career.
The team, consisting of Phelps, Matt Grevers, Brendan Hansen and Nathan Adrian, won by nearly two seconds over Japan, who took home the silver medal. The United States finished with a time of 3:29.25, while the Japanese finished with a time of 3:31.26. The Australians finished third with a time of 3:31.58 to capture the bronze.
The story though, as expected, is Phelps. With the gold medal, Phelps has now claimed six medals at the London Olympics -- four gold and two silver. Phelps' storied career ends with 22 medals -- 18 of which were gold, including the last one earned today.
The gold medal also keeps the United States' winning streak in tact in the 400m individual relay, as the USA has never lost the event.

Fresh off their dominating record-breaking win against Nigeria on Thursday, Team USA will try to stay undefeated in Group A basketball play on Saturday. USA was unconscious on Thursday, blowing away the Olympic scoring record of 138 points set by Brazil. Coach K's club drilled 29 three-pointers to put up an astounding 156 points in the blowout. Carmelo Anthony set the individual Team USA scoring mark, breaking Stephon Marbury's 31 points by hitting 10 of 12 threes for 37 points.
They'll face a slightly tougher test on Saturday when they match up against the Lithuanians. The Americans are still 34.5 point favorites, however, riding the momentum of their performance on Thursday. The Lithuanians have some NBA-level talent but the Americans should still overwhelm them.
Tip is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on the dedicated Olympics basketball channel as well as NBC Sports Network.

One day after moving past China in the overall medal count, Team USA now leads the Chinese in total golds. The USA had another good day at the pool which helped break a tie with China in total gold medals. The USA now holds a one-medal advantage over China in golds, after Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps added two at the aquatics center. It was likely the final individual race for Phelps, and he made it count by nabbing gold in the 100m fly. While his career comes to a close, the next great American swimmer may have burst on the scene on Friday when the 15-year-old shocked everyone to cruise to gold in the 800m free. China closed the gap in total medals but the USA is now on top in both categories.

Tampa's Phil Dalhausser is part of the men's beach volleyball team that won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics along with Todd Rogers. However, they were knocked out of the round of 16 on Friday against the Italian team. Players Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo beat the Americans in straight sets, 21-17, 21-19.
The statistics on both sides appear to be fairly even. Both teams had the same number of faults and about the same number of service aces and attack attempts. The big difference in the statistics is blocks. The Italian team managed five blocks during the match, while the Americans could only muster one.
The Italians now wait to see who they will face in the quarterfinals. They will match up against either the team from the Netherlands or the team from Switzerland which will begin on 9 a.m. on Saturday. The other American team, made up of players Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, will take on the Russian team Saturday at 5 p.m.

Well, hopefully the Aminu brothers' didn't have their careers destroyed by this game. Team USA laid a 156-73 beatdown in Nigeria in the men's basketball tournament, recording their widest ever margin of victory. Carmelo Anthony was the United States' top performer, scoring 37 points on on 13-16 shooting, including 10 made three-pointers. He played just 15 of the game's 40 minutes.
Miami Heat and Team USA star LeBron James let his teammates take the spotlight in this game, scoring just six points on 3-4 shooting. Russell Westbrook was the team's second leading scorer with 21 points on 7-8 shooting. As a team, the United States shot 71 percent from the floor and an absolutely unfathomable 29-46 from behind the arc. Their best quarter was the first, in which they scored 49 points.
Ike Diogu was very impressive offensively for Nigeria with 27 points, but he didn't get much help, and no one on Nigeria managed to play any defense. The game was such a blowout that NBA rookie Anthony Davis, branded the Christian Laettner of this year's team, got 15 minutes of game time and scored nine points.

Florida native Ryan Lochte grabbed two medals in swimming on Thursday at the London 2012 Olympics, but he was upstaged by his American teammates. He lost to Michael Phelps in the 200 meter individual medley, grabbing silver, and also took bronze in Tyler Clary's 200 meter backstroke victory.
Elsewhere, Gabby Douglas completed an impressive double, adding a women's all-around title to her women's team gymnastics gold that she won with Team USA. She's the third straight American woman to take the all-around crown.
The United States has either trailed China or been level with them in the medal count for most of the Olympics, but surged forward with strong performances across the games on Thursday. Two events where China is truly dominant, table tennis and diving, have now ended and the United States should start to pull further ahead when track and field events begin over the weekend. Rounding out the medal podium in the event was Denmark with the bronze medal, finishing just seven hundredths of a second behind Great Britain in an attempt to take the silver.

While American swimmers at the Olympics have by and large been pretty successful, not every event has seen the Americans finish on the podium. They were shut out of the 200m breaststroke finals, including University of Florida's Clark Burckle, who finished sixth at 2:09.25.
Burckle entered the finals after finishing second in his heat and in the semifinals. However, he couldn't overcome a world-record performance by Hungary's Daniel Gyurta, who won the gold medal with a time of 2:07.28. The silver medal was claimed by Michael Jamieson of Great Britain who finished with a time of 2:07.43. The bronze medal went to Ryo Tateishi of Japan, finishing with a time of 2:08.29.
The only other American in the 200m breaststroke finals was Scott Weltz who finished in fifth ahead of Burckle with a time of 2:09.02.

After the team faltered on Monday, Miami resident Danell Leyva won the bronze medal in the men's all around competition on Wednesday. Leyva finished with an overall score of 90.698, gold medalist Kohei Uchimura of Japan finished with a score 92.690 and silver medalist Nguyen Marcel of Germany scored 91.031.
Leyva had difficulties on the pommel horse, where he placed 19th out of 24 competitiors and 14th on the rings. Despite that, he rebounded with the best scores on his best events, the parallel and horizontal bars. The performance there helped him beat out fourth place finisher Kuksenkov Mykola of Ukraine who finished with a score of 90.432.

Yep, the U.S. men's basketball team started rather slowly against Tunisia on Tuesday. They led by just six points at the end of the first quarter. They led by, yes, six points against a team they were pegged to beat by 55.
But eventually, they got going in spite of the sluggish start, coasting rather comfortably to a 110-63 win over the 2011 FIBA African champions, who were playing in their first Olympic Games.
The Americans, who shot more than 60 percent from the field, were led by Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love, who each finished with 16 points. Anthony was actually perfect from the field, going 6 for 6, including 2 for 2 from 3-point range. Kevin Durant also had 13.

Day four of the London Games is in the books and the United States has a total of 23 medals, tied with China for the lead thus far. Meanwhile, the rest of the world appears to be playing catch up. The next closest, Japan, has 13 total medals and just one gold.
Team USA put forth a strong effort on Tuesday, picking up four golds, one silver and one bronze medal in a number of events, capped off by the Americans' record-setting performance in the 4x200m freestyle relay that saw Michael Phelps grab his 15th career gold medal. But the Chinese also matched that total, so the two countryes remain deadlocked.

Facing each other for the ninth time in their careers, Novak Djokovic had little trouble getting through Andy Roddick in the second round of the men's singles tournament at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, defeating the American 6-2, 6-1.
Roddick of Boca Raton, Florida held serve in each of his first two games of the first set, keeping the set tied 2-2, but Djokovic, representing Serbia in the 2012 Olympics, took over from there, losing just one of the next 11 games.
The matchup was the first time the two tennis headliners have faced each other since 2010 and surprisingly it's Roddick that still leads the all-time series between the two, 5-4. Roddick did not represent the United States during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but did in Athens in 2004 before being eliminated in the third round.

Finishing with the silver was Anders Golding of Denmark with 146 targets and 41-year old Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar finished with the bronze after defeating Valeriy Shomin of Russia in a shoot off. The bronze medal is Qatar's first of the Olympic games.

With convincing victories over France and Colombia in its first two matches of the Olympics, the United States women's soccer team is all alone at the top of their four-team grouping in the standings and will finish up play in the group stage on Tuesday against North Korea.
North Korea earned a 2-0 win against Colombia two days prior to the Opening Ceremony, but were blown out 5-0 by France in their second game of the games on Saturday.
With a three-point lead over both France and North Korea in the group standings and a significant lead in the goal differential, only an unlikely devastating, blowout loss to the North Koreans could threaten the US not advancing to the elimination stage of eight teams.
The game is scheduled to start 17:15 London time, which translates to 12:15 p.m. Eastern time, and is scheduled to be televised live on NBC Sports Network as well as NBC's Speciality: Soccer channel.

Former Florida Gator, Ryan Lochte, got his Olympics off to a perfect start with a dominant victory in the 400-meter IM, but has since faltered. After relinquishing a lead in the anchor leg 4x100-meter freestyle relay, earning a silver medal for the United States, Lochte was unable to find the medal podium in the 200-meter freestyle.
Instead it was Yannick Agnel of France that finished in the top spot on Monday night, finishing nearly two seconds before Lochte.
Lochte didn't hide his disappointment on Twitter after the event, tweeting, "Not so happy about that swim tonight... you live and learn. Tomorrow I will be better." He continued, "The greatest athletes suffer the hardest defeats before the biggest and best moments of your life.... God has a plan for everyone."
He'll have a chance to get himself back on track in the Olympics and the 200-meter event with the 4x200-meter freestyle relay on Tuesday night.

The United States earned five medals on Monday, including two gold medals in swimming events. Four of those five medals came in the water, and the fifth came above the water in a diving competition. Team USA now has 17 medals, which ties them with China for the overall lead at the 2012 Olympic games.
Missy Franklin did not disappoint in the women's 100m backstroke. Favored to win the gold, she did just that. It was her first taste of Olympic gold, and she competes in another four events as the games continue. Rebecca Soni won the silver medal in the women's 100m breaststroke.
Matt Grevers won the other gold medal on Monday for the Americans. He cruised to a win in the men's 100m backstroke. Teammate Nick Thorman finished with a silver medal in the same event.
In diving, the team of David Boudia and Nicholas McCrory won the bronze medal in the men's synchronized 10m platform event. It was the first medal ever in synchronized diving for Team USA.

Team USA entered Monday with a great opportunity to earn a medal in the Men's Gymnastics Team event. Unfortunately, that was not meant to be for the Americans. The team, which includes Tampa resident Danell Leyva, had the highest qualifying score of all the teams that participated, but struggled throughout the day.
Leyva, who is a specialist on the parallel and horizontal bars attempted to help Team USA get back into the medal hunt, but the team finished with a final overall score of 269.952. They finished about two points behind bronze medalist, Great Britain and six points behind gold medalist, China. Japan finished with the silver medal in this competition.
The United States was attempting to win their first gold medal since the 1984 and their first gold medal in an olympic competition not involving a boycott. Leyva will return to action on Wednesday as he and fellow American John Orozco will compete in the all-around competition.

Andy Roddick is back at Wimbledon. This time, however, he is playing in the 2012 Summer Olympics tennis tournament. The Boca Raton star won his opening round match on Monday, beating Serbia's Martin Klizan to advance to the second round.
Rain forced the match to move to Monday. The delay did nothing to hurt Roddick's play as he won by a 7-5, 6-4 final. Klizan committed 21 unforced errors versus just five for Roddick. The American tennis star converted just two of 13 break points. Nevertheless, he did not have to expend much energy in the win.
On the women's side, Wimbledon champ Serena Williams cruised past her opponent, Poland's Urszula Radwanska, by a final of 6-2, 6-3 in second round action on Monday. Williams showed the same dominate form that propelled her to her fifth Wimbledon title, with eight aces and 26 winners in both sets. She faces Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the third round.

Americans holding gold medals are Ryan Lochte and Dana Vollmer in swimming and Kimberly Rhode in shooting. Lochte also has a silver medal along with fellow swimmers Allison Schmitt, Nathan Adrian, Elizabeth Beisel, Ricky Berens and Kelci Bryant in diving.

After narrowly defeating France by the slimmest of margins in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay in Beijing in 2008, it would be the U.S. who was on the end of a crushing defeat, as they would have to settle for silver.
France won the race with a time of 3:09.93. The U.S. was just behind with a time of 3:10.38, while Russia took home the bronze at 3:11.41.
Ryan Lochte was a late addition to the roster, and was the anchor of the four-man team, but he was not able to power past France as the team did in 2008. Michael Phelps was impressive in his leg, but it was not enough to capture another gold medal.
This is the second medal for Lochte, who took the gold in the 400m individual medley on Saturday.

The United States archery team grabbed the first medal of the 2012 London Olympics for the U.S., but it was a painful one.
The team comprised of number one archer in the world, Brady Ellison, Jacob Wukie and Edgewater, Fl. native Jake Kaminski fell just short of their bid for a gold medal as they lost to Italy by a final score of 219-218 in what came down to the last shot of the competition.
Italy's Michael Frangilli needed a nine to tie and 10 to win gold on his final shot and got the 10. The silver medal was the first U.S. archery medal since 2000.

The first full day of competition has begun at the 2012 London Olympic Games, with swimming one of the earliest events to kick off, highlighted by the rivalry between Americans Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps in the pool.
Early Saturday morning London time saw the 400M Individual Medley qualifying take place, with former Florida Gator Lochte grabbing the third spot in the evening's final. Lochte finished second in his heat to Japan's Kosuke Hagino, with a time of 4 minutes, 12.35 seconds.
His rival Phelps, on the other hand, barely made the final. Despite winning his heat with a time of 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds, Phelps qualified in the eight and final spot in the final.
Lochte won Bronze in the 400M IM in Beijing in 2008, and has beaten Phelps in the event at the Olympic trials and won the world championship in IM in both 2009 and 2011.

The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London will be starting here soon, although we will not be able to watch them until later tonight because of NBC's infinite wisdom dictating that a tape delay is a good idea. British director Danny Boyle, best known for films like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours" is heading the opening scene, entitled "Green and Pleasant." An official press release from the Olympics official site describes what the scene will be about.
The whole of the field of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. The set will be complete with meadows, fields and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze - including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs.
The ceremony is set to be televised on NBC at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. Its kind of odd that a network would advertise itself having so much online streaming coverage and not offer a live feed of the opening ceremonies so that people can see the American team walk in live, see the torch brought in live and the Olympic torch lit.

Phil Dalhausser has been nicknamed the "Beijing Beast" after he and partner Todd Rogers dominated the competition in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics en route to gold for the United States. Dalhausser, a native of Orlando, is 6-9 and according to Brian Cazenueve, is the favorite to repeat with Rogers as gold medalists in the 2012 London Olympics.
Cazenueve of Sports Illustrated recently predicted the medal results of every Olympic event and he expects the United States to narrowly win the medal count over China by two medals.
Zach Railey of Clearwater was predicted to finish with the bronze medal in his sailing event, the men's finn for heavyweight dinghy while his sister Paige Railey was predicted to just miss the podium in the women's laser radial with a one-person dinghy.
Danell Leyva of Miami, FL is predicted by Cazenueve to finish with the silver medal in the parallel bars in men's gymnastics.

Jake Kaminski of Edgewater, FL had a long road to his first Olympics since winning the National Championship in archery in 2005, but the 2012 London Olympics kicked off for Kaminski on Friday morning in the men's individual ranking round.
As a team the United States archery team earned a first round bye after finishing in fourth collectively, and Kaminski earned a spot in the next round of play with Friday's 18th best performance among individual men. The finish earns Kaminski a relatively easy start to his tournament play as he will face a archer that finished much lower than himself in the ranking round.
Kaminski was quick to get to his Twitter account after finishing:
Well it's official I am now an #Olympian just finished ranking round. Ranked 4th as a team and 18th indiv. W/670 even shot a 60!

While the NBC Olympics website promises to provide fans with "access to live streams of every Olympic event" there is one particular event during the games in which they're going to leave us hanging. The opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics will not be streamed online and those that hope to watch the opening festivities will have to wait for them to be televised on a tape delay.
Those that like to watch their sports and other events live as they happen will be out of luck as the opening ceremony will begin over three hours before anyone on the United States gets a chance to see what's happening.
While the ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. in London time, that is 4 p.m. ET and fans will not have access to any official broadcast or stream of the event live. At 7:30 p.m. local time in each time zone in the United States, the opening ceremony will be shown on NBC.

The first even of the 2012 Summer Olympics took place this afternoon in London. After the United States women's soccer team fell behind after two quick goals by France, they rallied to defeat France on Wednesday, 4-2.
After France got goals from Thiney Gaetane in the 12th minute and Delie Marie-Laurie in the 14th minute to take a 2-0 lead, Team USA scored four unanswered goals. Two goals were scored by Alex Morgan, who tied the game in the first half with a goal in the 32nd minute and sealed the game away with a goal in the 66th minute.
Abby Wambach cut the French lead in half in the first half with a goal in the 19th minute and Carli Lloyd gave Team USA the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute.
Team USA managed to get six shots on goal to France's three and also led in offensive possession, 53%-47%. Other than that, the stats look very even, with both teams getting about the same number of fouls, corner kicks and offsides calls. Team USA's next game will be Saturday against Columbia on Saturday, playing at 12 p.m. EDT.

Carmelo Anthony came off the bench to score 27 points, 23 of which came in the first half, to help Team USA move to 5-0 in pre-Olympic friendlies on Tuesday in Barcelona by a final score of 100-78.
LeBron James pumped in 25 points for the Americans and Kevin Durant helped break the game open in the second half as he scored 10 of his 13 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter.
The game was a far cry from the 2008 thriller between these two teams during the gold medal game in Beijing where Spain gave the U.S. a scare.
Pau Gasol scored 19 points for the Spaniards and Serge Ibaka, who just became a Spanish national a year ago, scored 16 points in a losing effort.

Team USA took the court on Saturday in Barcelona wearing throwback uniforms of the 1992 Dream Team. But that's where the similarities ended as the United States downed Argentina by a final score of 86-60.
The original Dream Team had an average margin of victory of 43.8 points during their historic run 20 years ago. The close contests that the United States has had not only in friendlies this summer but over the past few years is symbolic of how the world has closed the gap between themselves and stateside ball players.
Kevin Durant led the way for the Americans on Saturday by scoring 27 points. Team USA actually led by 20 at one point in the contest, but fouls combined with aggressive play by the Argentinians got them back into the game.

For the past two season's, the Miami Heat's LeBron James has been the most hated player in the NBA.
From the debacle that was 'The Decision' in the summer of 2010, to questions about his ability to lead a team, take the big shot in clutch moments, his mental toughness and the fact that up until this past June, he hadn't won a ring, all of those have been used as fuel for hatred of what has arguably been the NBA's best player for a few years running.
But now that he has his shiny golden ring in the NBA, LeBron is on the hunt for another gold medal with Team USA this summer in London.
In an interview with HoopsHype, LeBron spoke on a number of subjects, including his popularity around the NBA:
LJ: I don't care if I'm more liked or more wanted by people. People are going to have opinions about me no matter what. For me, as a player, I'll try to do what it takes to win, and off the court I am who I am. I can't change what people think about me.

After losing in the first round of the 2012 French Open in late May, Serena Williams looked entirely defeated and broken down. Now less than two months since the loss, Williams has risen to the top of the tennis world, winning the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon.
That win has earned the Florida resident the honor of being the favorite to win gold in women's tennis at the 2012 Olympics in London. Via bet365.com, Williams earned the top spot, just ahead of Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka.
The player that Williams defeated in the Wimbledon final, Agnieszka Radwanska, earned the fifth spot on the odds rankings.
Conveniently for Williams, the play in the tennis competition at the Olympics will take place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where the Wimbledon Championships are also held.
