Dolphins Quarterbacks: Ryan Tannehill Or Matt Moore 'Could Be' Named Starter This Week

Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has strongly hinted that the starting quarterback decision most likely will be made after Friday's home exhibition game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Philbin said on Sunday that the decision between Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore is still up in the air and "could be" made this week.

"We may have a decision soon, or we may play it out another week. That's still up in the air. We certainly haven't come to any decision on that right now."

All the Dolphins quarterbacks struggled to a certain degree in the 23-17 loss against the Carolina Panthers.

Tannehill went 11-of-23 for 100 yards and Moore went 5-of-15 for 57 yards. Tannehill did have one scoring drives, but his other five drives ended in punts. Moore took one drive from the Miami 11 to the Carolina 34 but only mustered a 52-yard field goal at the end of it.

Philbin didn't mince his words when it came to his quarterbacks' performances.

"Do we have to be better? Yeah. Were there some accuracy issues? Sure. Was there a time or two our quarterbacks could have stepped up to avoid pressure? Absolutely.

"They did do some good things. They had almost five drops, which impacted our ability to move the football. They didn't run a lot of bad plays, we didn't throw the ball into double coverage an awful lot. But their game management was relatively good."

Dolphins Vs. Panthers Reaction: Miami Has More Questions Than Answers

On the surface, a 23-17 preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers seems meaningless. But with just three weeks until the opening of the 2012 regular season campaign, Friday night's loss highlighted a myriad of problems facing the Miami Dolphins.

The offense looked stagnant although rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill looked more than capable and ready to assume starting signal caller duties from under center. But the offensive line looked awful blocking as Tannehill was sacked four times in the first half.

The running game was nonproductive as five players combined to rush for 37 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries and the receiving corps was led by by Marcus Thigpen who tallied just 40 yards on three receptions.

Perhaps the Chad Johnson fiasco served as a distraction to the team last week, so it remains to be seen if Friday night's performance was just an anomaly or indicative of greater problems.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers Final Score: Carolina Outlasts Miami 23-17

By halftime, it appeared as if the Carolina Panthers were going to blow the Miami Dolphins out of the stadium, but the Phins fought back and made the final score of Friday night's NFL preseason game respectable although they fell by a final score of 23-17.

Miami held Carolina to just three points in the second half, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the first half damage done by Cam Newton and the Panthers first string offense.

Ryan Tannehill got the start for Miami and had a solid game as he threw for 100 yards passing. Tannehill's backup on Friday was Pat Devlin, who played just as well. Devlin finished the game throwing for 118 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers Score Update: Miami Trails Carolina 20-7 At Halftime

Ryan Tannehill got the start under center in Friday night's Miami Dolphins NFL preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, but hasn't been able to lead the Phins to many points on the scoreboard as Miami trails 20-7 at halftime.

Tannehill is 11-23 passing for 100 yards. His counterpart, Cam Newton, completed eight of his 11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Miami has had very little success on the ground. Lamar Miller and Reggie Bush have just four carries between them for seven combined yards, clearly indicative of the gameplan to put the ball in the hands of Tannehill and see what he can make happen.

Carolina is dominating Miami's porous defense as they lead the game in total yards thus far, 295 to 107.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers: Backups To Watch In Miami's Week 2 Game

The Miami Dolphins take on the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 of the 2012 NFL Preseason, as as always with preseason games there are a number of relatively unknown players looking to make an impression. SB Nation Dolphins blog The Phinsider has a helpful guide to those players, pointing out five non-starters to watch.

[Rishard] Matthews

is a intriguing guy for Miami. He showed off a returner ability last year, but has not been a factor in the passing game so far. For a wide receiver to establish himself as one of the eleven guys to claim one of just six positions, just being a good returner is not going to be enough. Matthews has to show up soon, and most likely in this game, if he wants to work his way out of the wrong side of the cut line.

Head over to The Phinsider for a complete rundown on who to look for in Week 2's game.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers: Miami Wide Receiver Battle One To Watch

Chad Johnson is out of the picture in Miami, which leaves 11 other Dolphins wide receivers battling for what will likely be only six roster spots. The Dolphins are in Carolina to face the Panthers for their second preseason game tonight at 8 EST.

There aren't really a lot of names that will strike fear into opposing defenses, but the Dolphins do have plenty of options.

The Phinsider akes a look at the WR depth chart, where it looks like Legedu Naanee and Davone Bess are the starters and only Julius Pruitt seems to have claimed another spot. That leaves at most three roster spots open for eight players, each of whom will be looking at tonight as perhaps their last chance: Marlon Moore, Jeff Fuller, Rishard Matthews, Roberto Wallace, Brian Hartline, B.J. Cunningham, Chris Hogan, and Clyde Gates.

Naanee, Bess and Pruitt will at least get a chance to see how they mesh early on with rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who will start his first NFL game tonight.

Eric LeGrand Will Be Bucs Honorary Captain

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Eric LeGrand will be an honorary captain when the Bucs take on the Miami Dolphins Friday night at Raymond James Stadium.

LeGrand signed with the Buccaneers to a no-pay contract in May following the 2012 NFL at the urging of new head coach Greg Schiano, who was LeGrand's head coach in college at Rutgers. LeGrand retired from the NFL in July when the Bucs began training camp.

LeGrand was paralyzed while playing with Rutgers in 2010 after a collision during a kickoff. Doctors told LeGrand that he would remain a quadriplegic for the rest of his life and unable to breathe without the use of a ventilator, but his rehabilitation has been nothing short of a miracle so far.

Five weeks after his injury, LeGrand began breathing on his own, and he can now stand up with the assistance of a metal frame and can sit up by himself for up to 15 minutes at a time.

The Buccaneers have a number 52 Eric LeGrand jersey available to purchase on their team website with the proceeds going to the Eric LeGrand foundation, which is dedicated to helping those with spinal cord injuries.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers: Ryan Tannehill To Start At Quarterback, According To Report

The Miami Dolphins will get their first look at rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the first time against a first-team defense. News broke early Friday that Tannehill will start at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, according to a report broadcaster Dick Stockton.

Broadcaster Dick Stockton, who is calling tonight's game in Charlotte (7:30 p.m., CBS-4, Channel 34 West Palm Beach), said this morning on 790 The Ticket that Tannehill will, in fact, start against the Panthers. Veteran Matt Moore will serve as the backup and likely enter the game in the third quarter.

In Tannehill's Dolphins debut last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he went 14-of-21 passing for 167 yards and a touchdown. That was mainly against reserves in the second half of the game but, with David Garrard's injury, Tannehill will be elevated to the starting job much quicker than most expected.

The Dolphins game against the Panthers is set for an 8 p.m. start from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Check your local listings for the television and radio broadcasts in your area.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers: Game Time, TV Schedule, Injury Updates And More

The Dolphins defense faces an interesting test in second-year quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers offense. Last week, the Texans were able to get after the Panthers early and Carolina's offense was never really potent against Houston.

Miami is looking to put all of the Chad Johnson/reality tv show drama behind them and focus on football in this one. The quarterback battle between Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill grows even more interesting as the rookie continues to improve, so that will be fun to watch.

Take a look at the schedule and broadcast information below:

Date/Time: Friday, August 17 at 8:00 p.m. EDT

Location: Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina

Dolphins Vs. Panthers Injury Report: Miami's Tony McDaniel Sidelined By Knee Injury

The Miami Dolphins have several players battling injuries at this point in the preseason, including quarterback David Garrard and defensive lineman Tony McDaniel. Both players have been out of action because of knee injuries, but while a timetable for Garrard's return is known, McDaniel's situation has not been clarified by the team.

Garrard and DL Tony McDaniel both were absent from practice, each coping with knee injuries. Garrard is expected to miss as many as four weeks while he undergoes treatment. There is no public timetable for McDaniel's return.

Dolphins Vs. Panthers: Should Ryan Tannehill Start?

The conventional wisdom among folks comparing all of the quarterbacks drafted in the first round was that Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill had the highest hill to climb to be a starter in the NFL. However, looking at his statistics from his first preseason game, Tannehill may not have as high a hill to climb as was once thought.

Tannehill went 14-for-21 for 167 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Compare that to other first-round quarterbacks: Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden completed 3-of-9 for 67 yards and an interception. Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III went 4-for-6 for 70 yards and a touchdown. Indianapolis Colts' first-overall pick Andrew Luck went 10-for-16 for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Granted, Tannehill came into the game off the bench and his numbers were put up against reserves. But Tannehill could be given a chance to see what he can do against a first-team defense soon. That opportunity should come against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. It is still early enough in the preseason for him to show he could do fairly well.

Dolphins Injury Update: Karlos Dansby, Brian Hartline Battling Injuries

In addition to the knee injury suffered by quarterback David Garrard, the Miami Dolphins are coping with a number of other setbacks. Linebacker Karlos Dansby has been kept from practicing over the last two days thanks to an undisclosed issue and wide receiver Brian Hartline hasn't been able to practice because of a calf problem. The Phinsider has an overview of Hartline's situation:

Hartline has not participated in any of the Miami training camp practices as he rehabs a calf injury. He is expected to be cleared to practice in the next 7-10 days. He has to get back on the field as quickly as possible if he want to ensure he will make the team, and to ensure he has a shot at starting. Like Garrard, if Hartline is not progressing, he could be placed on IR, using the one player removal policy if Garrard isn't, to make space to carry another wide receiver early in the year.
