Dolphins Rookie Report: Derrick Shelby Turning Heads

Stay connected for news and updates

Undrafted and unheralded out of the University of Utah following his senior season, defensive end Derrick Shelby signed quietly with the Dolphins before camp.

Despite the lack of fanfare surrounding Shelby's signing, he's certainly made an impact in camp so far in 2012.

Comparing himself to Julius Peppers and playing on the second string in preseason games, Shelby cannot be ignored.

At Utah, Shelby was named All-Pac-12 during his senior year during which he had five sack and nine tackles for a loss in a 45-tackle season overall. In Utah and Shelby's first season in the Pac-12, Shelby proved a spotlight for the Utes, who struggled a bit to adjust to the new conference, finishing 7-5 (4-5 in the Pac-12) and went to the Sun Bowl.

After Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake was involved in a car accident last week, Shelby could also see himself named as starter for Miami's next preseason game.
