Team USA built a significant lead in the overall medal count on Thursday with a productive day on the track. While David Rudisha and Usain Bolt stole the show with their performances in the 800 and 200, the USA clinched gold-silver finishes in two separate events. Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee went 1-2 in the decathlon and Christian Taylor and Will Claye captured the top two spots in the triple jump.
In addition to the big day on the track, Team USA captured gold in two of the team finals -- women's soccer and women's water polo. Team USA also has a two-medal lead in the gold count, edging China with 39 total golds. Here is how the top five looks in the latest medal count:
- United States, 90 (39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze)
- China, 80 (37, 24, 19)
- Russia, 56 (12, 21, 23)
- Great Britain, 52 (25, 13, 14)
- Germany, 37 (10, 16, 11)
