2012 U.S. Open Results: Andy Murray Defeats Novak Djokovic For 1st Grand Slam Title

Andy Murray took the U.S. Open Championship and finally earned his first Grand Slam tournament title with Monday's five-set win over No. 2 Novak Djokovic.

Murray, the tournament's No. 4 seed, needed a 22-point tiebreak to win the first set, a U.S. Open final record. The Dunblane, Scotland native took the second set as well, 7-5.

But Djokovic would not go quietly -- the Serb and ATP No. 2 player took the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to force a fifth set. Murray turned the rising Djokovic tide with a win in the fifth set's first game and didn't look back. Djokovic paused down 5-2 to be looked at by trainers, but Murray finished him off quickly to earn the U.S. Open crown.

The tournament was open for the taking for both Djokovic and Murray, as Rafael Nadal was out with a knee injury and Roger Federer suffered a quarterfinal loss to No. 6 Tomas Berdych. Murray continued the momentum he built over the summer with his Olympic gold medal on home soil and took advantage of a draw sans Federer and Nadal.

American Andy Roddick announced he would retire after the US.. Open, and his run ended with a fourth-round loss to Juan Martin del Potro. Florida native Mardy Fish withdrew due to health concerns prior to his round-of-sixteen match against Federer.

Tampa resident Serena Williams took the women's crown with her epic three-set win Sunday, in which she won the final four games of the match.
