The second round of the 2012 Tour Championship has finished up, and after two days of golf Jim Furyk sits atop of the leaderboard. The resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. had the low round of the day, collecting nine birdies and three bogeys to finish 7-under overall (6-under for the day).
Justin Rose, a resident of Orlando, is right behind him at 6-under. Tiger Woods, who opened the day tied with Rose for first place, struggled in the second round. Four birdies partially offset the damage, and he settled in 12th place, 3-over on the day and 1-under overall. Rory McIlroy is 2-under overall and tied for seventh place.
Florida is well represented in the rest of the top 10, making for a total of six of the 10 spots. Baghdad native Bubba Watson is 5-under and tied for third. Tied for fifth at 4-under are Florida residents Dustin Johnson (Jupiter) and Matt Kuchar (Winter Park). While most of the big names -- Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson -- are still in the clubhouse, play is underway at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
The field has been cut down significantly since the FedEx Cup playoffs began, as the top 30 golfers in the world will tee off in the final tournament of the 2012 season, which will decide the FedEx Cup.
The course has been unforgiving early, as only 4 of the first 22 golfers to hit the links are currently under are par.
All four -- Bo Van Pelt, Robert Garrigus, Scott Piercy, Ryan Moore -- are at -2, with Piercy and Moore currently through nine holes and Van Pelt and Garrigus through four.
That's good news for the PGA, since it means the big names competing for the Cup will have ample opportunities to get ahead of the field early.
