Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh was the head coach with the Virginia Cavaliers when Golden was an assistant at the school, as MIchael Casagrande of the Sun Sentinel points out. Golden served as the Cavaliers' defensive coordinator from 2001-05, with Groh at the helm for all five of those years. In a video interview, Golden talks about how much Groh has meant to his career:
"I owe so much to coach Groh. ... He's meant a lot to my coaching career and he's taught me more about football than anybody has in 18 years. ... It's with a great deal of admiration and respect that we now bring a team and I have a chance to coach against him."
