The Norfolk Admirals are the American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Admirals finished the regular season with an AHL-record 28-game winning streak, and they've continued rolling through the playoffs to reach the Calder Cup finals against the Toronto Marlies.

Norfolk won the first two games at home before heading to Toronto for tonight's Game 3. It was a tight defensive struggle that went into overtime scoreless, and it might have gone on indefinitely until the Admirals got what I guarantee is the flukiest game-winning goal you will ever see in hockey.

Video after the jump.

Boom. Game over. Mike Kostka's dump-in from center ice hit one of the metal supports holding up the glass and kicked out at a 90-degree angle towards the ice. It skittered along the goal line and through the crease, and bounced into the net off the far post while Marlies goalie Ben Scrivens waited behind the net for a puck that never came to him. The Admirals won 1-0 and now lead the series three games to none.

You hear the phrase "team of destiny" a lot, probably too much in fact. But when this happens... THIS is a team of destiny.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I wish Gene Deckerhoff would retire from announcing. I can't listen to him call Bucs games anymore because he can't figure out who catches a pass (or if they catch it at all), who makes a tackle, how many yards someone gained, etc. etc. etc. Mundane plays are overhyped to make a four-yard pass sound like an 80-yard game-breaker. He's all like FIRE THEM CANNONS and daggers and calling out small towns and taunting the other team now, and it's tough to listen to if you remember how good Gene was in his heyday.
↵
Gene also calls Florida State football games, so he was the obvious choice as an emcee at Raymond James Stadium when the Seminoles hosted an alumni event there tonight. See if you can figure out where this statement goes wrong:
↵
↵
Gene Deckerhoff, longtime voice of Seminoles and emcee tonight, says he wants FSU fans to outnumber USF fans "2 to 1" in Sept. game here.
↵— Greg Auman (@gregauman) May 4, 2012

↵
↵↵
↵
Raymond James Stadium seats 65,657 people. So after the roughly 21,000 USF season-ticket holders and the 12,501 seats in the student section, FSU fans will have to claim 67,002 of the remaining 32,156 tickets to make Gene's dream come true. And it's not like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It's really not that hard to get FSU tickets in Tallahassee these days. Just ask the thousands of USF fans who went up there to watch the Bulls' 17-7 win in 2009.
↵
Are there going to be lots of Seminoles fans at the game in September? Of course. I could see something like 15,000 easily, or even 20,000. But 2-to-1 FSU? That's a stretch of near O'Learyian proportions. Why don't you just stop talking for awhile, Gene.

Skip Holtz and the South Florida Bulls can officially claim their latest big-name transfer. Aaron Lynch, a freshman All-American at Notre Dame last season, has registered for classes at USF and joined the Bulls football team.

News of Lynch's potential transfer first surfaced a couple of weeks ago. The former Cape Coral High School standout and five-star prospect wanted to move back closer to his hometown of Fort Myers and never seriously considered transferring to any school other than South Florida, the first school to offer him a scholarship for the Class of 2011. Notre Dame granted him a release from his scholarship (and prevented him from going anywhere in Florida except USF), he visited the campus this past weekend, and today it became official when Lynch signed up for the Summer B semester, which begins June 25.

While there is a slight chance Lynch could become eligible for the 2012 season, it's more likely he will have to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules and then suit up for the Bulls in 2013. He may ultimately be a one-and-done player since he is already viewed as an early-round NFL Draft pick. But however long he ends up playing for USF, he will be one of the highest-profile players to put on green and gold.

Things are awfully good for Plant High School football coach Robert Weiner. His Panthers have won four state championships in the last six years, including the 2011 title in the new Class 8A, the highest classification in the state. By any measure, he coaches one of the best high school teams in Florida.

So if you don’t like stories about guys who win a lot winning even more, go ahead and stop reading now. Just skip down to that Stan Van Gundy story. I’ll wait.

…

You ready? OK. Robert Weiner won a new car tonight.

Plant football coach Robert Weiner won the grand prize at the annual Hillsborough County Coaches Banquet when his name was drawn for a new car on Saturday night at the Downtown Hyatt. The car is a 2012 Ford Focus and is donated by area Ford dealers.

And much like Dante Hicks, Weiner wasn’t even supposed to be there today. He was supposed to be speaking at a coaches’ clinic in Daytona Beach, but when it was canceled, he went to the banquet instead.

At least Weiner knows a story like this would drive some people crazy:

"I told everyone there, ‘I know there’s going to be people that hate that I won this because they think Plant wins everything,’ but it’s such an honor.‘’

Uh, there’s no “think” about it, Robert.

Matt Joyce and Luke Scott each drive in three runs as the Rays win their second straight over the Yankees.

Matt Joyce and offseason acquisition Luke Scott drove in three runs apiece as the Tampa Bay Rays knocked off the New York Yankees 8-6 on Saturday night in front of another sellout crowd at Tropicana Field.

The Rays never trailed in the game, scoring in each of the first three innings and building a 4-0 lead. Scott had a two-run single in the first, Carlos Pena drove in a run in the second with another base hit, and Matt Joyce led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run.

In the seventh inning, Evan Longoria had an apparent home run overruled when a confused fan in a Rays hat and Yankees jersey reached over the right-field fence to steal the ball away. Not to worry, though, because Joyce singled to left to score Pena and Longoria to extend Tampa Bay's lead to 8-2.

David Price picked up the win for the Rays, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs and five hits. Price struck out five, but struggled a bit with his control. He walked four, threw a wild pitch, and only got 38 of his 75 fastballs over for strikes. Fortunately he was able to consistently get out of jams and stay out of major trouble.

The Yankees rallied in the ninth inning. Curtis Granderson was given a triple when Joyce, unfamiliar with left field, misplayed a long fly ball that ricocheted off his glove. Raul Ibanez hit a sacrifice fly to score Granderson, and then with two runners on and two outs, Nick Swisher hit a towering three-run homer to right field off Joel Peralta to cut New York's deficit to 8-6. Robinson Cano then drew a walk off Jake McGee to bring the tying run to the plate. But Fernando Rodney retired Alex Rodriguez with one pitch, as he grounded out to second to end the game.

Tampa Bay will look for a three-game sweep of this opening series on Sunday afternoon at 1:40pm Eastern time. Jeremy Hellickson takes the ball for the Rays, while the Yankees counter with Phil Hughes.

If you attended the Rays’ opening-day game in St. Petersburg today, you might have noticed two subtle changes to the Trop that honor last season’s playoff-clinching, extra-inning win over the New York Yankees.
↵
The first addition is the “162 Landing,” directly behind the left-field wall that Evan Longoria’s 12th-inning home run cleared to give the Rays the 2011 AL wild card. The second is the Dan Johnson Seat, which has been painted white. It’s the seat in the front row of Section 140 where the Great Pumpkin’s pinch-hit home run with two outs in the ninth landed to tie that game at 7.
↵
Given the Rays’ ability to celebrate the most obscure, arcane things about themselves (see also: DJ Kitty mascot), you knew they would find an appropriate way to remember a game that has already earned a lasting place in franchise history.

I only get back to Tampa one week a year. Even though I follow all four local teams very closely, I absolutely refuse to turn on sports radio when I'm back home. The worst of it seems to be collected on one station. (You know which one.) It's pandering, ignorant trash, designed to insult your intelligence and get you so angry that you keep listening to see what ridiculous thing they'll say next. You can try calling in to argue, but odds are you'll get rudely hung up on and taunted by the host. And that's when the shows are good.
↵
When they're bad, you get stuff like this from Dan Sileo:
↵
Sileo: "They're gonna spend all that money."↵
Co-host: "And Dan'll be like, 'well, they're not really that good.'"
↵
Sileo: "No! No! If they get those three monkeys, I'm good! I'm ready, man. I'm ready. I want those guys. Those guys are great players."
↵
↵
Good one, Dan.
↵
People of Tampa Bay: If you really want better sports talk radio (and I'm pretty sure you do), STOP LISTENING TO THIS GARBAGE. They don't care if you like it or hate it, as long as you have that radio dial tuned in to give them good ratings. There are two other sports radio stations in town that do much better work. Change the station, change the culture.
↵

The Bulls look for their 20th win of the season against West Virginia as both teams jockey for position in the NCAA Tournament.

Another pivotal game awaits the South Florida Bulls this afternoon at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on their quest to claim the program's first NCAA Tournament bid since 1992. The opponent in USF's regular-season finale is the West Virginia Mountaineers, who are in danger of sliding out of the field of 68 completely. Tipoff is at noon, with TV coverage on Bright House Sports Network and on the Big East Network.

USF (19-11, 12-5 Big East) picked up the signature win they badly needed for their Tournament resume on Wednesday, knocking off #19 Louisville 58-51 on the road. Jawanza Poland led the Bulls with 16 points, including a clutch three-pointer and a long baseline jumper off an inbounds play to keep the Cardinals at bay in the final minutes of the game. A win over West Virginia and a loss by either Notre Dame or Georgetown would earn USF a "double bye" at next week's Big East tournament, meaning they would skip the first two days of play and advance straight to Thursday's quarterfinals.

While the Bulls are surging towards the postseason, West Virginia (18-12, 8-9 Big East) is sagging. The Mountaineers have lost seven of their last 10 games, although they did rally to beat DePaul 92-75 on Tuesday. Truck Bryant led WVU with 28 points, while Kevin Jones added 22 points and 16 rebounds. The Mountaineers' record is a bit deceiving -- they've lost to Baylor, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Marquette, and Louisville by a total of 12 points -- but they may need to win this game just to stay in the NCAA Tournament picture. They also need a win and a Seton Hall loss to avoid playing on the first day of the Big East tournament, which would force them to win five games in consecutive days to claim the league's automatic bid.

USF has been heavily marketing this game and should see easily its biggest and loudest crowd of the season at the Forum. And just to add to the excitement and rancor, this will likely be the last time these two teams play each other as conference members, as West Virginia rather rudely departs for the Big XII this summer.

The Bulls scored the first basket of the second half to extend their lead to 24-17. But Louisville answered with a 17-6 run over the next five-plus minutes, finishing it with a Chris Smith three-pointer that gave the Cardinals a 34-30 advantage. After a few minutes of fencing and parrying, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick tipped in a Victor Rudd miss to tie the score at 41 with 8:22 to play.

From there USF’s tenacious defense went to work. Louisville only scored four points from the 8:22 mark until there were just 40 seconds left. By then, the Bulls had taken a 50-45 lead, and they made eight of ten at the free-throw line down the stretch to finish off a critical win.

It’s still February, but it’s never too early to start in on a hated(?) divisional rival. On Sunday, Rays manager Joe Maddon was asked about Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine banning beer from his team’s clubhouse in the wake of last year’s September collapse and the brouhaha that the inside story caused throughout New England. His answer?
↵
↵
“We’re not the Boston Red Sox.”
↵
↵
Maddon went on to say that he’s more concerned about his players making good decisions, and if they feel like having a beer after a game and they’re legal, so be it. (The Rays also allow drinking on flights to road trips, or from one leg to another, but not on the flights back to St. Petersburg.)
↵
Previously, Maddon had told Boston’s WEEI that banning alcohol from a major-league clubhouse was both “knee-jerk” and “asinine,” and probably became the first MLB manager to name-drop the Volstead Act in an interview:
↵
↵
“But to say a grown-up can’t have a beer after a game? Give me a break. That is, I’m going to use the word, ‘asinine,’ because it is. Let’s bring the Volstead Act back, OK. Let’s go right back to prohibition and start legislating everything all over again. All that stuff pretty much annoys me, as you can tell.”
↵
↵
But back to yesterday’s interview. Someone also asked Maddon about fried chicken in the clubhouse, and the answer was almost as good:
↵
↵
“Depends if that’s what they’re serving that night,‘’ Maddon said. "It kind of goes well with (beer) actually.’’
↵
