College Basketball Scores: Gators win opener

Florida wins opener while Florida State is upset.

Here's a roundup of local men's basketball action.

No. 10 Florida def. Alabama State, 84-35

The Gators had no problem in their opener Sunday. Florida cruised past Alabama State thanks to 22 points from Kenny Boynton. Center Patric Young added 12 points and 12 rebounds in 25 minutes.

South Alabama def. No. 25 Florida State, 76-71

South Alabama controlled the game from start to finish to upset previously ranked Florida State. Senior guard Michael Snaer had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Florida State. The Seminoles were ranked No. 25 before the loss, but dropped out of the top 25.

Miami def. Stetson, 87-79

The Hurricanes got a great performance from center Reggie Johnson. The senior scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win. Stetson was led by its own center, Adam Pegg, who scored 22 points and had nine rebounds.

Georgia def. Jacksonville, 68-62

Jacksonville scored 41 second-half points, but it wasn't enough to make up a 21-point showing in the first half. Keith McDougald led all Dolphins scorers with 13 points.

No. 11 North Carolina def. Florida Atlantic, 80-56

The Owls could not contain annual powerhouse North Carolina in their season opener Sunday. Senior guard Greg Gantt led Florida Atlantic on the floor. He scored 18 points.

UCF def. South Florida, 74-56

Isaiah Sykes gave the Knights a big performance, scoring 26 points and hauling in 11 rebounds in the win. Keith Clanton was also a big factor, scoring 16 points and bringing down 16 rebounds. Jawanza Poland led the Bulls with 22 points.

Houston def. Florida A&M, 81-76

Florida A&M had a halftime lead but couldn't hold on to it. The Rattlers were led by Jamie Adams and Reggie Lewis, who each scored 18 points.
