2011 Bowl Projections: Current Projections Place Florida In Gator Bowl, Florida State In Champs Sports Bowl

After struggling through much of the first half against the Furman Paladins of the FCS, the Florida Gators pulled away in the second half, coasting to a 54-32 win, securing their sixth victory of the season, making them bowl eligible. Representatives of the Gator Bowl have said that Florida, despite their not-too-stellar 6-5 mark, will be invited to play in the Jacksonville-based postseason game. They are currently projected to face the Ohio State Buckeyes from the Big Ten.

The heavily favored Florida State Seminoles lost a 14-13 heartbreaker to the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday night, snapping a five game FSU winning streak. It was Virginia's first win in eight tries in Tallahassee. Florida State ends the year with their traditional season finale next Saturday when they face the Gators.

Here are current bowl projections for Florida and Florida State:

Champs Sports Bowl, December 29, 2011

Notre Dame vs. Florida State

Gator Bowl, January 2, 2012

Florida Gators Score Update: Gators Defense Scores 14, UF Beats Furman Paladins 54-32

The Florida Gators (6-5) were on upset alert as late as the fourth quarter, but the UF defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns as the Furman Paladins (6-5) tried unsuccessfully to complete a comeback shocker.

The Gators fell down early in the first quarter, allowing the Paladins to jump to a 22-7 lead, but then regained major ground in the second quarter as they shut out the Paladins offense and scored 20 points. In the third quarter, with the Gators leading 27-22, both teams managed to add 10 points on a pair of field goals and a pair of big plays.

With the game at 37-32, the Gators opened the fourth quarter with a 55 yard field goal from Caleb Strugis, who had already missed two easier field goals (51 and 40 yard attempts) on the day.

Trailing 40-32, Furman quarterback Chris Forcier fired a pass directly into the arms of defensive back De'Ante Saunders, who bolted to the end zone for a pick-six and a 47-32 Gators lead. On the ensuing Furman drive, Forcier rifled yet another pass at a waiting Gators defenseman, as Jelani Jenkins snatched the ball and sprinted UF to a consummate 54-32 lead.

Florida Gators head coach Will Mischamp was displeased with how close the game had been, saying to reporters after the game, "We made it interesting and it shouldn't have been."

The Gators will finish the regular season schedule next week as they face state-rival the Florida State Seminoles.

Florida Gators Score Update: UF Leads Furman Paladins 37-32

The Florida Gators (5-5) managed to sneak into the half leading the Furman Paladins (6-4) despite giving up 22 points in the first quarter. As they enter the fourth quarter, the Gators look poised for a late-game showdown, leading by only five points.

The third quarter started slow, with the teams exchanging field goals, but with a few minutes remaining in the quarter, Andre Debose (151 yards, 2 TD) caught his second deep-bomb touchdown pass, giving the Gators a 37-25 lead. But then, one play later, Jerodis Williams charged 77 yards for a rushing touchdown and a 37-32 game.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Gators will be looking for continued production from quarterback John Brantley who has thrown for 294 yards and 4 deep touchdowns while completing 14 of 23 attempts. The Gators running back Chris Rainey left the game early with an injury, but has since returned and dashed for 94 yards on 12 carries.

Furman Vs. Florida: Gators Rally Back, Take Lead 27-22

The Furman Paladins drive to start the second quarter was short lived as the drive died and they punted the football back to the Florida Gators. The Gators marched right down the field thanks to quarterback John Brantley and Jordan Reed connecting on some slants. In just seven plays, the Gators marched down the field and got in the endzone on a 1-yard touchdown run by Hunter Joyer to cut the Furman lead to 22-14.

Furman's next drive went nine plays, but it was short lived. The Paladins were able to march down to the Florida 34-yard line, but decided to punt the football for a touchback, putting the Gators on the 20-yard line. Florida's offense suddenly found life, scoring on the first play of the drive. Brantley hit wide receiver Andre Debose for an 80-yard touchdown pass, but the Gators went for two points, failing to get the conversation but cutting the Furman lead to 22-20.

Furman once again couldn't get their offense going as the upset began to slip away. Furman's punt was blocked out of bounds by the Gators, giving Florida the ball on the 34-yard line. Two plays into the drive, Brantley once again went deep for a touchdown, connecting with Quinton Dunbar for another touchdown tying Brantley's career high for touchdown passes with his third of the day.

Furman went three and out again giving the ball back to Florida, but the Gators couldn't increase their lead as Caleb Sturgis missed his second field goal of the day. The Gators enter halftime with a 27-22.

Florida Vs. Furman Score Update: Gators On Upset Alert As Furman Leads 22-7

The Florida Gators got the football first against the Furman Paladins and slowly plodded down the football field. It didn't help the Gators offense much that explosive running back Chris Rainey went down on the first drive of the game. The Gators drive stalled out around mid-field and Caleb Sturgis missed a field go.

The Paladins took over with great field position and went right down the field thanks to two 20+ yard runs. Jerodis Williams punched the ball in from 1-yard out, but the extra point was missed to give Furman the early 6-0 lead. On Florida's ensuing possession they were backed up after a poor return and penalty, then the football was snapped over John Brantley's head, giving Furman a safety. Furman goes up 8-0.

Furman got the ball back after the free kick and immediately went right back down the field. The Gators couldn't seem to contain the option on the drive and then Furman quarterback Chris Forcier hit David Hendrix for a 31-yard touchdown pass, putting the Paladins up 15-0. It looked like Furman was going to pull away from Florida, as the Gators looked absolutely flat, but Brantley drove the Gators down the field and connected with Jordan Reed for a touchdown to get on the board.

The Paladins weren't done in the first quarter however, as Furman busted out the trick play as Colin Anderson connected with Sederrik Cunningham for the 47-yard touchdown pass to put Furman up 22-7 over the Gators.

Chris Rainey Injury: Gators RB Injured Early On

The Florida Gators are hosting the Furman Paladins today in what should be an easy tune up game to prepare for their match up with Florida State next week. Early in the game however, Florida running back Chris Rainey went down with some sort of injury. According to reports on Twitter, Rainey was on the ground clutching his face mask and appeared to be in a lot of pain.

Chris Rainey hurt on the play. Clutching facemask, looks to be in a lot of pain. Rainey walked off the field and is being looked at on the training table now.

The Gators have been banged up at the running back position all season long, so another injury at the position will hurt quite a bit.
