Florida Gators Football Recruiting 2012: National Signing Day Recap

The Florida Gators picked up a solid class of recruits on National Signing Day 2012. Although some Gators fans may be disappointed in the final list, a Top-Five finish when all is said and done is nothing to scoff at. The 23 players that have committed to the school comprise an extensive list of talent.

The Gators picked up three different five-star recruits and a slew of four-star players. The five-star player in the 2012 class were top defensive ends Jonathan Bullard and Dante Fowler Jr. and offensive lineman D.J. Humphries.

In terms of four-star recruits, the school acquired offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker, defensive tackles Damien Jacobs and Dante Phillips, running back Matt Jones, defensive backs Marcus Maye and Brian Poole, linebackers Antonio Morrison and Jeremi Powell, wide receiver Latroy Pittman and tight ends Kent Taylor and Colin Thompson.

The three-star recruits in the 2012 class are wide receiver Raphael Andrades, defensive backs Willie Bailey and Rhaheim Ledbetter, defensive ends Brian Cox Jr., Alex McCalister and Quinteze Williams, defensive tackle JaFar Mann and quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg.

2012 Florida Gators Football Recruiting: Will Muschamp Gets Strong First Class In Gainesville

Will Muschamp was facing a lot of pressure from the Florida fans after a very average first year in Gainesville, but his first full recruiting class should to a lot to ease the fears of anyone who wasn't thrilled about the early returns on his hire.

Florida rode a strong National Signing Day, including a couple key steals from in-state rivals, to what appears to be a consensus top-five class. Scout.com has them right at the ceiling of that distinction, giving them the No. 5 class overall. Rivals feels a little bit stronger about their class, and puts them in at No. 3 overall. The biggest bump they got on National Signing Day was from the flip of five-star defensive end Dante Fowler, who had originally committed to Florida State.

Josh Harvey-Clemons' Grandfather Won't Sign Letter Of Intent

Josh Harvey-Clemons, the No. 2 ranked linebacker in the country and a five-star recruit committed to Georgia over the likes of Florida, Florida State, and Miami. Harvey-Clemons grandfather and legal guardian, Woodrow Clemons, will not sign off on the scholarship papers.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, ranked the state's No. 1 overall prospect by ESPN, committed to UGA on national TV but his grandfather - who is also his legal guardian - reportedly won't sign off on the scholarship papers.

"Everyone has to sign, you know?" Josh's uncle, Roy Hart, told the AJC around 3 p.m. Wednesday. "But he's going to sign, from what I understand."

It's unknown if Harvey-Clemons will flip his commitment, but some family members did indicate they were surprised he chose Georgia over Florida and Florida State.

Florida Football Recruiting: Gators Officially Pull In 23 Commitments On National Signing Day

Florida football has officially announced 23 commitments on National Signing Day, with all 23 having signed their letters of intent and six players being early enrollees. The headline of the Gators 2012 recruiting class is five-star defensive back Brian Poole from Bradenton, FL out of Southeast High School. Poole is rated as the No. 2 cornerback in the country. The Gators were also able to land a commitment from the No. 3 ranked offensive tackle, five-star D.J. Humpries from Charlotte, NC out of Mallard Creek High School.

Florida was also able to flip a top ranked defensive end from his commitment to Florida State, as four-star defensive end Dante Fowler, Jr. from Lakewood High School in the Tampa Bay area, as he decided to flip his commitment to the Florida Gators. Fowler cited the state of the Seminoles depth chart at defensive end for the reason for his switch.

The Florida Gators did miss out on a couple of players they thought they were going to pick up, as four-star offensive tackle Avery Young decided to head to Auburn over Florida. The Gators also missed out on five-star athlete/wide receiver Nelson Agholor who chose to head to USC over Florida and Florida State. Agholor was the third rated wide receiver in the 2012 recruiting class.

The Gators class is ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 5 overall as of now, according to Scout.com.

Avery Young Commits To Auburn Over Miami, Georgia, Florida

Avery Young, a consensus Four-Star recruit, has committed to the Auburn Tigers, announcing the news on television on National Signing Day 2012. Young, who played for Palm Beach Gardens, chose Auburn over Miami, Alabama, Florida and Georgia, the four other finalists for his services.

During his announcement on the National Signing Day special on ESPNU, Young said, "Everything about Auburn fit me real good. I was raised in the country, so there's a little city/country mix ... they made sure I felt like I was at home."

Young had zeroed in on Auburn on National Signing Day after also considering Georgia and Miami. The lineman felt that the school best matched his personality and provided his greatest chance for success.

Young was the 12th-highest offensive lineman in the Rivals rankings. He joins an Auburn squad that will look to groom him into one of the nation's top linemen.

Nelson Agholor Commits To USC Over Florida, Florida State

Nelson Agholor, a consensus 5-Star recruit, has committed to USC, announcing the news on television on National Signing Day 2012. Agholor, who played for tiny Berkeley Prep in Tampa, chose the USC Trojans over Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, the four other finalists for his services.

"It's been very difficult. With the right people around me, I feel like I've made a good decision," Agholor said in the televised announcement on ESPNU.

Agholor had zeroed in on USC on National Signing Day after also considering home state schools Florida and Florida State. Agholor stated that he wanted to play alongside the potent USC offense and attempt to start his college career as a wide receiver. He noted the allure of catching passes from a Heisman candidate in Matt Barkley.

Agholor was the third-highest wide receiver in the Rivals rankings, trailing only Dorial Green-Beckham and Stefon Diggs. He joins a USC squad that is primed to be a major threat in the Pac-12 next season.

Dante Fowler Flips Commitment To Florida Gators Over Florida State

Dante Fowler, ranked as a five-star recruit by most rating services, has committed to Florida, announcing the news on television on National Signing Day 2012. Fowler, who played for Lakewood High School (St. Petersburg, Fla.), chose the Florida Gators over Florida State, the other finalist for his services.

Up until recently, it had appeared that Fowler was committed to FSU, but it was difficult to say if his commitment was solid or not. He had expressed some concerns over being able to get consistent playing time with the Seminoles, and had been flirting with the Gators more and more in recent weeks:

Fowler was reportedly concerned about the Florida State depth chart, as the 'Noles already feature two All-America candidates in Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner, as well as twoother five-star defensive end recruits in Chris Casher and Mario Edwards Jr., who confirmed earlier this week that he too would stick with his commitment to the Seminoles. (Bud Elliot, SB Nation)

Fowler thanked the Florida State Seminoles before saying that Florida was just the right place for him as he made his commitment official this morning. You can see an interview with Fowler on ESPN.

Fowler was the No. 28 recruit in the nation on Rivals.com's Top-100 list, and he is the third-best defensive end in this year's class.

Tracy Howard Commits To Miami Over Florida, Florida State

Tracy Howard, ranked as a four or five star recruit by almost every service, has committed to play for the Hurricanes, announcing the news on television on National Signing Day 2012. Howard, who played for Miramar High School (Fla.), chose Miami over Florida and Florida State, the two other finalists for his services.

"I chose the University of Miami, because I look at the overall picture of it, from the academic standpoint to the opportunity standpoint," Howard said, "I've got a great bond with the coaches."

For all your National Signing Day and college football recruiting news, visit SB Nation's recruiting hub.

Howard had zeroed in on Miami on National Signing Day after also considering Florida and Florida State. Howard was considered a Florida lean for a very long time, so this is a big coup for Al Golden and the Hurricanes.

Howard was the second-highest defensive back in the Rivals rankings, trailing only Shaq Thompson of Sacramento, California. He joins a Miami squad that is almost always flush with talented defensive backs.

Josh Harvey-Clemons Commits To Georgia Over Florida, Florida State

Josh Harvey-Clemons, ranked as a four or five star recruit by almost every service, has committed to Georgia, announcing the news on television on National Signing Day 2012. Harvey-Clemons, who played for Lowndes High School (Ga.), chose the Georgia Bulldogs over Florida, Florida State, and Miami, the three other finalists for his services.

When asked what influenced his decision, Harvey-Clemons cited his strong relationship with Georgia's head coach Mark Richt, and the fact that Richt has put many players in the NHL. He was impressed with Georgia's desire to win, and their coaching staff helped put his decision over the top.

For all your National Signing Day and college football recruiting news, visit SB Nation's recruiting hub.

Harvey-Clemons was the No. 31 recruit in the nation on Rivals.com's Top-100 list, and he is the top-ranked linebacker. He joins a Georgia squad that has a deep defense, which puts Harvey-Clemons' playing time situation up in the air. He will certainly play with Georgia, but he appears to be sacrificing playing time certainty in favor of playing for his home-state team.

National Signing Day 2012: Dante Fowler Could Decommit From FSU To Join Florida, According To Report

National Signing Day is the first day that committed players can fax in their letters of intent, but until they do there is nothing preventing them from going back on their verbal commitments. So there will be some players today that switch to a new school, despite having promised to play elsewhere. One of the bigger names in the state of Florida may be doing just that, as it appears he may switch his commitment from FSU to Florida.

Fowler is a five-star prospect on Rivals at defensive end, and is listed as the third best player at that position in the class. He is also rated the 28th best prospect in the 2012 class. If in fact he does commit to Florida over FSU, it would be a big coup for Will Muschamp and the Gators.

Nelson Agholor Recruiting Announcement Time, TV Schedule And More

Agholor, who played his high school ball at tiny Berkeley Prep in Tampa, is 6'1 and 185 pounds and reliably clocked with a 4.40 40-yard time. He has narrowed his final five list to Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, and Oklahoma.

The five-star athlete boasted more than 40 scholarship offers, and is considered one of the top student-athletes in the class. Reports yesterday afternoon indicated that Agholor had narrowed his list down to Florida and USC, with Lane Kiffin making a strong late push.

Josh Harvey-Clemons Recruiting Announcement Time, TV Schedule And More

Tracy Howard Recruiting Announcement Time, TV Schedule And More

Miramar High School (Fla.) product Tracy Howard is one of the top cornerback recruits in the country. Almost every recruiting service has him ranked as at least a four star prospect. Howard holds offers from more than 30 BCS conference schools, but has long been projected to stay in-state and land at either Florida, Florida State, or late-comer Miami.

For all your National Signing Day and college football recruiting news, visit SB Nation's recruiting hub.

The wait will end on Wednesday morning, as Howard is scheduled to announce his school choice on ESPNU at 9:35 AM. He will kick off a busy signing day on ESPNU, and likely make one head coach in Florida a very happy man.

The Gators have long been considered a favorite to land Howard. He has visited the school many times and is very familiar with their coaching staff. Florida State is also in the running, as the Hollywood, FL native has visited Tallahassee several times as well. Miami made a late push, with Howard not seriously considering the Canes until he decided to take his final official visit there last week.

Florida Gators Recruiting: Stefon Diggs Delays Announcement, Will Visit Maryland

Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) wide receiver Stefon Diggs has decided to visit the Maryland Terrapins just a day before National Signing Day, though he does not plan to make his announcement Wednesday.

Florida is among the many schools interested in Diggs and he visited Gainesville during one of his official visits.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound standout is the nation's No. 14 recruit according to MaxPreps and the No. 3 athlete on the board as well. He is ranked No. 8 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com, who gave him five stars.

Diggs will most likely announce his decision on Feb.10. He has made official visits to California, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State and has received over 30 offers from various schools. He had 36 catches for 808 yards and scored 13 touchdowns this season.

National Signing Day: Darius Hamilton Will Announce Decision Tuesday Night

All-American defensive line recruit Darius Hamilton will announce his decision on where to play football Tuesday night on MSG Varsity’s sports show, "A Quick: 60," at 8 p.m.

Hamilton is reportedly choosing between the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes and Rutgers Scarlet Knights, though many have said it is down to Florida and Rutgers, however that may have changed now that Greg Schiano has left for the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end ranks as high as No. 11 nationally in the Rivals.com rankings, which have him as the No. 2 DE in the class. He’s one of several top prospects considering Florida.

Hamilton visited Rutgers last week and coaches from the Florida Gators visited withhim shortly thereafter. Hamilton was unable to visit Florida with his mother because of her unavailability.

The show can be watched live on www.msgvarsity.com.

National Signing Day: Florida Gators Recruiting Odds

The Florida Gators are typically one of the best college teams in the country at recruiting, and right now, it looks like they are poised for another excellent year. They have currently received commitments from a couple of recruits -- including Damien Jacobs and Kent Taylor -- and they are in the mix for top recruits Tracy Howard and Nelson Agholor.

It's impossible to say exactly how many recruits the Gators will land tomorrow, but the folks over at the blog Bourbon Meyer have listed out the odds that specific players will end up with UF. It should be noted that these odds are their own estimates, and although they may be based on projection work done by ESPN, Rivals, and Scouts, they are still personal estimates.

For all your National Signing Day and college football recruiting news, visit SB Nation's recruiting hub.

CB Tracy Howard (UF, FSU, Miami): 1:3
WR Stefon Diggs (UF, Auburn, Ohio State, Maryland) 1:2
ATH Nelson Agholor (UF, Southern California, Notre Dame, FSU): 2:1
DE Leonard Williams (UF, Southern California): 2:1
OT Avery Young (UF, Auburn, UGA): 3:1
DE Darius Hamilton (UF, Rutgers, Miami): 4:1
LB Josh Harvey-Clemons (UF, UGA, FSU): 5:1
OT Jake Meador (UF, Wisconsin, Missouri): 6:1
DE Dante Fowler (UF, FSU): 8:1
LB Schyler Miles (UF, Kansas, West Virginia): 10:1
DT Vincent Valentine (UF, Nebraska, Illinois): 15:1

Gator fans out there, you agree or disagree with these odds? Most of them seem fair to me, although I think Howard's odds might be even be a little low (and Agholor's possibly a bit high).

National Signing Day 2012: Tracy Howard Deciding Between Miami, Florida, Florida State

Tracy Howard is almost inarguably the best cornerback in the state of Florida, and his commitment is going to come down to one of the three in-state power-houses. Howard will decide on Wednesday between the University of Florida, Florida State, and his hometown Miami Hurricanes; and a compelling case can be made for each school. Bud Elliot has a complete breakdown written up at SB Nation that weighs the pros and cons of each school. If you're a fan of either of those three teams it is worth reading, but here is the quick summary.

Miami offers the ability to play for a hometown team and probably the best chance to play right away. Howard has also commented on academic prestige of the U. But they aren't quite as successful as the other programs he is considering and their future doesn't appear to be quite as bright.

The Florida Gators are considered the favorite as they have been for a while now. That's their biggest advantage, but they also offer a scheme that enables Howard to play man-to-man coverage which you would assume is appealing to a cornerback. But after a sub-par season, the future of that program is in a little bit of question.

The Seminoles are probably the longshot, but they might offer the best chance to play for a winning team. If that proves to be more important than the other factors, including playing time, then the Seminoles might stand a chance after all.

We'll have plenty more on this situation as it develops, but for more on recruiting and all things Miami football, please head over to The 7th Floor, SB Nation's Hurricanes blog. Nelson Agholor, National Signing Day 2012: Wide Receiver Will Decide Between Florida, USC, According To Report

One of the biggest uncommitted recruits in the Nation is Tampa's own Nelson Agholor. Here is some more information on Agholor's recruitment via Erik McKinney of ESPN.

Agholor has trimmed his list to a final five, which features USC, Florida, Oklahoma, Florida State and Notre Dame, but most believe this will come down to a battle between the Trojans and Gators. Lane Kiffin and his staff did everything they could to grab the late momentum, visiting Agholor's home last Monday and securing his final official visit.

There is plenty more about Agholor's visit to USC in that article, and based on the friendships he has developed there and the atmosphere that they can offer him, it might be difficult for the Gators, or the Seminoles for that matter, to keep him in-state. But he will be one of the biggest names making his announcement on Wednesday.

College Football Recruiting: Damien Jacobs Commits To Florida, Spurns Tennessee

Damien Jacobs, among the top JUCO defensive tackle prospects in the nation, stunned the Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday when he reversed his commitment to them and elected to sign with the Florida Gators instead. The Gators announced the commitment on their athletics website. According to the press release, Jacobs tallied 47 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries, two sacks, and two fumble recoveries for the East Mississippi Community College Lions.

"Jacobs blossomed into one of the better JUCO defensive tackles in the country during his time at EMCC," Bud Elliott of SB Nation writes. He later offers this assessment of Jacobs' skills:

Jacobs' skill set is similar to that of Leon Orr coming out of high school. He's a big body, capable of creating havoc, but needs to be more consistent.

Jacobs' commitment brings Florida's recruiting tally to 18. The University says he will enroll in January "and participate in all spring football activities."
