The Miami Marlins have been busy on the rumor mill of late, and it’s getting to be almost impossible to keep up with all the rumors surrounding the team. Many of these rumors are likely mere idle speculation and will not come to pass, but still, the Marlins have had an exciting beginning to the offseason so far.
We’ve covered the recent rumors surrounding Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols already in these electronic pages, but what about the rest of the action out there? Here are all the other juicy tidbits out there right now about the Marlins:
- According to Jon Heyman, Marlins President Larry Beinfest “won’t rule out” making a run at Prince Fielder if Albert Pujols goes to another team. Considering that the Marlins have made a competitive offer for Pujols already, it appears they’re serious about bringing in a high profile slugger.
- The Marlins are also probing the trade market, and they are interested in Athletics starter Gio Gonzalez (Joe Capozzi, Palm Beach Post). They aren’t pursuing Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano, despite the fact that manager Ozzie Guillen seems convinced Zambrano will have a bounce-back season.
- Since closer Leo Nunez is having immigration problems back in the Dominican Republic — that whole “Oh wait, Leo Nunez isn’t my real name” thing made matters difficult — the Marlins are pursuing free agent Ryan Madson as a fallback option.
