The Panthers try to win their fourth straight game for the 14th time since winning seven straight in 2008. Does Ottawa have anything left after last night's shutout win in Tampa Bay?
The Panthers started the second period like they started their first, collecting the first seven shots on goal in the first two minutes.
Again, like in the first, the Senators notched a marker first. Kaspars Daugavins (4) beat Clemmensen between the pads with assists from Brian Lee and Erik Condra at the five minute mark.
Bobby Butler (6) doubled the Ottawa lead just two minutes later as Bobby Butler redirected a pass from Milan Michalek around Clemmensen to make it 3-1. Jason Spezza also earned an assist on the play.
Matt Bradley and Zach Smith dropped the gloves at the eight minute mark. After a few haymakers, Bradley pulled Smith down, ending it, an apparent draw. Each participant was assessed a five-minute fighting penalty.
Chris Phillips was assessed an interference penalty on Mikael Samuelsson at the 12 minute mark putting the Cats up a man. He was joined just under two minutes later by Sergei Gonchar who was called for high sticking Brian Campbell. After an 11 second five on three, Phillips rejoined the action on the ice. Daniel Alfredsson (20) charged up the ice and scored a shorthanded goal with an assist awarded to Daugavins.
After allowing all four goals on Ottawa’s first 16 shots, Clemmensen was pulled in favor of Jose Theodore with six minutes remaining in the period.
At the 17 minute mark, the Senators were awarded their first power play of the evening when Stephen Weiss was called for slashing Nick Foligno, but the penalty ended without further damage incurred to any comeback chances for the Panthers.

Florida hasn’t won three in a row in 14 tries spanning four seasons, and Craig Anderson has the Panther’s number, sporting a 6-0-1 record and a 2.22 GAA against Florida. In spite of historical ineptitude and Florida’s record against Anderson, this team has had three days off, and Ottawa played in Tampa Bay last night.
First Period:
Florida opened with an assault on Craig Anderson, collecting eight shots in the first five minutes of the period. The Senators, however, would strike first, as Jim O’Brian (1) gathered up a rebound and stuffed the puck home on a wrap-around, beating an out of position Scott Clemmensen. Nick Foligno and Brian Lee assisted on the goal at the six minute mark.
Shawn Matthias (10) would net the equalizer 12 minutes in, streaking into the Ottawa zone and beating Anderson with a wrist shot from the left side. Mike Weaver collected his 14th assist of the season. It was Matthias’ 25th NHL goal, while 14 points this season marks a new career high for Weaver.
Florida took to the man advantage when Tomas Kopecky was hooked by Filip Kuba behind the Ottawa net at the 16 minute mark. Three clears, two saves, a malfunctioning clock, an unfortunate offsides penalty and two minutes later, Kuba charged out of the box with a breakaway chance against Clemmensen. The goalie easily kicked the puck aside.

Senators coach Paul MacLean figures to ride the hot hand in goal. Craig Anderson has been confirmed as the starter tonight. He boasts a career 6-0-1 record with a 2.22 GAA against the Panthers, and shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning last night.
After starting the season 16-8-4 in their first 28 games, and appearing to run away with the division, the Panthers came crashing down to earth. The team posted a 5-7-6 record over their next 18 games, and looked suddenly vulnerable to divisional threats in Washington and Winnipeg, as well as threats to their top-eight standing. They seem to have turned their fortunes around, going 6-2-1 in their last nine games. They look tonight to earn their first four game winning streak since March of 2008. The Panthers have had 14 occasions since then to win a fourth straight game, posting an 0-14-0 record in those instances. They may have their best shot tonight. They take on a tired Ottawa Senators squad coming off a 4-0 road blanking of the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. Florida, meanwhile, has had three days off since beating the Devils and Islanders on back-to-back road games this weekend.

Florida will be hosting the Ottawa Senators today at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise. This is the third of four meetings this season between the two teams, and the first of two in Florida. Florida has a 14-5-7 home record, while the Senators boast a 14-11-5 record away from Ottawa. Florida is starting a four game homestand. They go on to host the Washington Captials on Friday, the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, and the Minnesota Wild next Thursday. The Senators are in the second game of a three game roadtrip. They defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0 last night and continue after tonights game to face the New York Islanders on Monday. The Senators took a 4-3 overtime victory on December 22nd in Ottawa in the last meeting between these two teams. For Florida, Michal Repik (1) scored in the second, Shawn Matthias (6) notched a power play goal in the third, and Tomas Kopecky (5) scored with a minute left in regulation to guarantee the Panthers at least one point. Bobby Butler (3) ruined it with a slapshot in overtime, while Chris Neil (4), Daniel Alfredsson (10), and Erik Karlsson (4) also scored for the Senators. Scott Clemmensen allowed four goals on 26 shots for the loss, while Craig Anderson saved 32 of 35 Panthers shots in victory. Butler spoke with the media regarding his overtime game winner after the game, according to NHL.COM,
"I was down by the left dot and (Turris) just saw me and threw it at me," Butler said after scoring his first goal since Nov. 15. "Good things happen when you put it to the net."

In Florida's last action, the Panthers won their third in a row at Nassau Coliseum, beating the New York Islanders, 4-1 on Sunday. Tyson Strachan (1) scored his first ever NHL goal in the first, while Tomas Fleischmann (18) scored the game winner with four minutes gone in the second, Kris Versteeg (22) added a power play goal seven minutes later, and Jack Skille (3) capped it with a wrister off a faceoff with one minute remaining in the period. Frans Neilsen (10) scored the lone marker for New York. Jose Theodore marked a triumphant return to the starting lineup with 26 saves on 27 New York shots, while Evgeny Nabokov allowed all four goals on 15 shots for the loss, and was pulled in favor of Al Montoya in the third. Panther's coach Kevin Dineen spoke to the media regarding the uncharacteristic two game back-to-back road wins following the game,
"It was a good weekend for us … that was two solid games," Florida coach Kevin Dineen said. "It's satisfying. You go out, you play hard and you get rewarded like that. I thought our all-around effort was good."

The Senators shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0 in Tampa Bay last night. Erik Karlsson (10) scored in the first, and Jason Spezza notched a hat trick, scoring on the power play in the second, an even strength goal midway through the third, and an empty netter with one minute remaining for the victory. Ex-Panther Craig Anderson stopped all 28 shots for his 19th career shutout, and second this season. Mattieu Garon allowed three goals on 26 shots for the loss. Lightning coach Guy Boucher spoke to the media regarding Tampa Bay's lack of offense against the Senators,
"We just couldn't score again," Lightning coach Guy Boucher said. "We're playing Ken Dryden when we play Ottawa. Three games in a row we get wide open nets and wide open opportunities, and either he (Anderson) makes a save or we miss the net."

At the 17 minute mark, the Senators were awarded their first power play of the evening when Stephen Weiss was called for slashing Nick Foligno.
Third Period:
The Senators didn’t take long to add to their lead, scoring just under two minutes into the third. Milan Michalek (25) beat Theodore with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle to put Ottawa up 5-1. Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson earned assists on the play.
Florida went on the power play at the three minute mark when Daniel Alfredsson was called for delay of game, accidentally sending the puck over the glass. Brian Campbell (4) gathered a rebound and let loose a fadeaway slapshot to beat Anderson, cutting the lead to three with 16 minutes to play in regulation. Sean Bergenheim and Tomas Fleischmann were awarded the assists on the goal.
Colin Greening slashed Tomas Fleischmann at the 11 minute mark, but Florida couldn’t get anything going, as the Senators repeatedly cleared the puck out.
Florida was called for too many men on the ice, nine to be exact as John Madden skated through the neutral zone with six minutes remaining. The Senators resultant power play was productive for a former Panther, as Filip Kuba (1) one-timed a cross ice pass from the right faceoff circle from Jason Spezza. Spezza’s assist was his third of the night. Daniel Alfredsson earned the secondary assist on the play.
What followed was an extended scrum featuring the Senators’ Zach Smith and the Panthers’ Matt Bradley, for the second time this evening. Tyson Strachan and Jack Skille were also involved. The Senators skated out of the mess with another power play. The Cats didn’t make things better, as the Panthers’ bench was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, making the action five-on-three. Skille skated out of the box for a breakaway chance, but missed his shot.

Score: Senators 6, Panthers 2
Even though the Panthers dropped the game, they are still four points up on second place Washington. It was Florida’s sixth home regulation loss of the season, tied with the New York Rangers for the fewest in the Eastern Conference. Florida will face the Washington Capitals on Friday in their next game action.
