Dante Fowler Surprises 'Noles, Signs With Florida

Dante Fowler, Jr. - four star recruit and one of the top defensive ends in the country - has committed to the Gators. From Lakewood High School in the Tampa Bay area, Fowler had been committed to Florida State for more than a year, but changed his mind this morning.

Fowler received more than 30 scholarship offers, despite character issues this year. He sat out half the season due to character issues, suspensions, and conflicts with his head coach. When the 6'3", 245 pound defensive end took multiple visits to Gainesville, I called it a blessing in disguise. If he was FSU's only Defensive End I might be worried, but considering the 'Noles already have five star D-Ends Mario Edwards and Chris Cashner signed in the 2012 class. Additionally, FSU is also seeking four-star defensive end Leonard Williams, whose maturity is noted by many, so the loss is nearly negligible.

His flip to the Gators is also understandable given the Seminoles' current roster:

Fowler was reportedly concerned about the Florida State depth chart, as the 'Noles already feature two All-America candidates in Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner, as well as twoother five-star defensive end recruits in Chris Casher and Mario Edwards Jr., who confirmed earlier this week that he too would stick with his commitment to the Seminoles. Fowler thanked the Florida State Seminoles before saying that Florida was just the right place for him as he made his commitment official this morning. You can see an interview with Fowler on ESPN.
