One of the oddest matchups in NCAA history, in which Florida State entered as a record 70-plus point favorite over Savannah State, ended on an equally odd note. After several rain delays, a shortened halftime and discussions about a second-half running clock, Saturday night's game was called with just under nine minutes remaining -- in the third quarter.
From SBNation's Florida State blog, Tomahawk Nation:
ESPN announced on its television broadcast that the game was final with 8:59 left in the third quarter.
At that point, FSU led 55-0, and had a yardage edge of 413 to 28.
Media was not told that the game had been cancelled, but a source told Tomahawk Nation that as of 9:25, the players were already showered and dressed. At 9:25, the emergency personnel had pulled out and the band was leaving.
Florida State's stats from Saturday will count and Savannah State will earn its payout as the game did not end as a forfeit.
Tomahawk Nation says delay occurred because of the 'legalese' surrounding the calling of the game early. It worked out well for both sides -- FSU earns an official victory and backups earned valuable game reps, while Savannah State earned precious money and avoided further humiliation or injury.

The Florida St. Seminoles will face their second-straight FCS opponent when they take on the Savannah St. Tigers on Saturday, and the FSU defensive line may be licking their chops at the chance to pad their stats against what will certainly be the youngest offensive front they see all year.
Looking at their depth chart, Savannah State is planning to start four freshmen on the offensive line on Saturday.

The four freshman played in the Tigers' season-opener against the Oklahoma St. Cowboys, which Savannah State lost 84-0. The Cowboys had just one sack on 27 pass attempts, but held the Tigers to 1.4 yards per rush.
Even with FSU defensive end Brandon Jenkins out for the season, things don't figure to get any easier for Savannah State this weekend.

The Florida State Seminoles held their first practice without Brandon Jenkins on Tuesday, after the star defensive end was lost for the season with a left foot injury against Murray State on Saturday.
Bud Elliot of SB Nation's Tomahawk Nation reported the Seminoles were having a tough time moving past the injury:
FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said Jenkins was clearly shaken by the injury.
"That's one of the things in this world that's not fair, because he is everything that's right about college football," said Fisher. "He wanted to come back and be a first-round draft pick, lead the team to a national championship, finish his degree and do all the right things."
Jenkins has 21.5 sacks in his career at Florida State. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Cornellius Carradine, who posted 5.5 sacks in 2011. The team was going about its business as normal at Tuesday's practice, and showed good effort despite the tough situation.
The Florida St. Seminoles are ranked No. 5 in the first SB Nation Blogpoll. Topping the Blogpoll are the Alabama Crimson Tide. The rest of the top five includes the USC Trojans, LSU Tigers and the Oregon Ducks.
Other ACC teams that are in this top 25 include the No. 10 Clemson Tigers after their victory over the Auburn Tigers and the No. 16 Virginia Tech Hokies after their overtime win against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The North Carolina Tarheels, Miami Hurricanes, Duke Blue Devils, Yellow Jackets and the N.C. State Wolfpack each received votes in the poll.
The Seminoles will face the Savannah State Tigers on Saturday. The Tigers lost to No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys last Saturday, 84-0. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick off from Doak Campbell Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.

After the first week of the college football season the Heisman trophy projections have come out and Florida St. Seminoles defensive end Bjoern Werner has cracked the top 10 of SB Nation's Heisman poll at No. 7 after his great performance on Saturday:
Yes, it was unfair to force Murray State to attempt to move the ball on Florida State's defense. Yes, it is probably silly to credit any one Seminole defender for what was team-wide dominance (70 plays, 156 yards, three takeaways, three points allowed). But it is impossible to ignore Werner's stat line: five tackles, all solo, all behind the line of scrimmage. He logged four sacks and broke up a pass to boot. That makes the list no matter the opponent.
Yes this was against Murray State but any time a defensive player can get to the backfield and the quarterback as much as Werner did, his performance must be recognized. The real test will come once Florida State takes on some better competition, but that is still a few weeks away as they play another FCS team this week in Savannah State.
