Jaguars Coaching Search: Expect Shad Khan To Look At Big Names

New Jacksonville Jaguars owner says he'll do "whatever it takes" to find a successful coach in the team's coaching search.

Dec 17, 2011 - The Jacksonville Jaguars fired Jack Del Rio and transfered ownership of the franchise from Wayne Weaver to Shahid Khan in the course of a week. In a press conference on Friday, Khan talked a bit about the head coaching search for the team and who they would look at. A few weeks ago, former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick made the remark that he wouldn't be a candidate, because the Jaguars would be looking for someone that was both "young and cheap", of which Billick was neither.

Khan was asked about the coaching situation by the Florida Times-Union on Friday. "I think cheapness and the NFL don't go together," Khan said in his press conference. "This is not a cheap league. Our goal is not to get the expensive wrong coach or try to find a cheap good coach. we want the right guy that's going to win for us. Frankly some guy that I like and trust and you pay them whatever it takes."

From the way Khan speaks, it sounds as if he will be targeting a big name coach and not someone "young and cheap", especially given how much Khan goes back to mentioning the want to engage the fans and reenergize the fan base. Khan also spoke about leadership and made mention that a coach who didn't work out for another team won't necessarily not be successful with the Jaguars.

"You have to pay them a fare wage," Khan said. "But we're not looking for a bargain person. We're looking for the right person and paying them whatever's appropriate."

Don't be shocked come January if the Jaguars make a heavy push at someone like former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher or former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. From the sounds of it, Khan wants to hit a homerun with his first hire.
