Giants Vs. Jaguars: Postgame Analysis And Reaction

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a late comeback to beat the New York Giants 32-31 on Friday night. All eyes were on second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Jaguars fans are hoping Gabbert can make significant improvement after a rookie season that included a fair share of failure and disappointment.

In Gabbert's limited playing time on Friday, SB Nation Tampa Bay's editor-in-chief Alfie Crow said the following on Big Cat Country:

Overall, Gabbert had a pretty nice night and showed a lot of what some people wanted to see. In the very first play on offense, Gabbert just missed Marcedes Lewis deep down the field where Gabbert stood in the face of the rush and took a hit as he threw the ball, which likely caused it to sail.

Sure, it would have been great had the pass been completed, but the fact that he got the throw off without "crumbling" was something a lot of people were looking to see. Gabbert then engineered a 13-play, 89 yard touchdown drive.

Giants Vs. Jaguars Final: Late Comeback Gives Jaguars 32-31 Victory

While the story of the game will be predicated around the performance of Blaine Gabbert on his first drive as well as the sack/fumble that ended his third, a late game comeback was also notable as the Jaguars stormed back with an 18-7 second half score to earn a 32-31 victory.

With 21 points off Jacksonville turnovers, including a muffed punt by rookie Mike Brown in the fourth quarter, the Giants were able to combat some turnovers of their own to build a big lead, but the Jaguars hacked away at it in the second half on the back of third string quarterback Jordan Palmer.

Palmer finished the game as the Jaguars leading passer with 110 passing yards and a two point conversion to Matt Veldman, while Mike Thomas led the team in receiving yards with 89. Terrance Knighton, Aaron Morgan and D'Anthony Smith each recorded sacks for the Jaguars to slow a Giants offense that scored on four consecutive possessions early in the game.

Giants Vs. Jaguars Score: Montell Owens Cuts New York Lead To Three

Starting the second half for the Jaguars was quarterback Jordan Palmer and had no problem leading the Jaguars on a 13 play, 85 yard scoring drive capped by Montell Owens running clear over a Giants defensive back to cut the New York lead to just three.

The momentum continued for the Jaguars when D'Anthony Smith recorded a sack for the Jaguars on the first play of the second half for the Giants offense. Smith has missed each of his first two seasons in the NFL due to injury. The sack led to a three-and-out for the Giants.

Palmer finished the quarter with six completions on eight attempts for 86 yards passing. The Jaguars will begin the fourth quarter with the ball deep in their own territory.

Giants Vs. Jaguars Score: New York Out To 24-14 Lead At Half

Aided by a sack/fumble of Blaine Gabbert, the Giants had no problem scoring on four consecutive possessions in the first half, including two in the second quarter to get out to a 24-14 lead over the Jaguars in the first half of a week one preseason game.

After his fumble, Gabbert was finished for the game and replaced by new backup quarterback Chad Henne who completed four of nine attempts for 28 passing yards and a touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie late in the first half. Running back Rashad Jennings finished the first half with 56 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

In Andre Branch's debut as a member of the Jaguars, he collapsed the pocket once in the first half, setting up a sack for Terrance Knighton, while fellow rookie Bryan Anger launched a 56 yard punt in the second quarter as well as a punt that was fumbled and recovered by the Jaguars inside the five-yard line.

Giants Vs. Jaguars Score: Blaine Gabbert Leads First Quarter Touchdown Drive

After the first quarter in the first preseason game of the season for the Jaguars, they trail the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, 10-7. Most notable for Jaguars fans, though, was the very successful drive lead by second year quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

On a 13 play, 89 yard drive, Gabbert completed four of seven attempts for 51 yards, culminating in a touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III in the back corner of the end zone.

Gabbert's second drive ended before it hardly began, though, as Shorts III fumbled an end around on the first play of the game. In replacement of Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings finished the first quarter with 42 rushing yards on seven attempts.

The Giants settled for a 34-yard field goal on their second drive of the game to cut the Jaguars lead to four and took a 10-7 lead with a two-yard touchdown run by D.J. Ware.

Derek Cox was removed from the game in the first quarter with a strained calf although the severity of the injury was not revealed.

Giants Vs. Jaguars: Justin Blackmon And Rashean Mathis Among Scratches

While fans eagerly await the the Jacksonville Jaguars first game of the preseason against the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, there will be some players they will have to wait to see including top draft pick Justin Blackmon.

Blackmon signed with the Jaguars three days ago, so it was unlikely that he would be able to play in the team's first game. Cornerback Rashean Mathis is also out of the lineup despite being toward the top of the depth chart at cornerback.

Here is a full list of scratches from Charlie Bernstein of ESPN 1040 AM.

Giants Vs. Jaguars: Blaine Gabbert To Take 17-20 Snaps

Speaking to Jacksonville media on Thursday, Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey set some expectations for Blaine Gabbert's play time during Friday's preseason game against the New York Giants. Mularkey told media members to expect Gabbert to play somewhere between 17 to 20 snaps on Friday.

The expectation is a reasonable amount for the second year starting quarterback who is set to debut following a less than stellar rookie season.

Mularkey also talked with the media about his solution for the sudden rash of injuries at the left guard position that has left them thin at the position. Right tackle Eben Britton will move to the left guard spot, while second year offensive tackle Cameron Bradfield will fill Britton's void on the right side of the offensive line.

Friday's game at Everbank Field is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Giants Vs. Jaguars: Justin Blackmon Out Of The Lineup, Cecil Shorts To Start

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without Justin Blackmon when they open their preseason schedule this week with a Friday game against the New York Giants. Cecil Shorts III will be in the starting lineup as the team's Z receiver with Blackmon out of action.

Shorts was the Jaguars' fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He battled hamstring injuries in his rookie season which limited his work. He caught just two passes for 30 yards and a touchdown with the offense last season. He played his college ball at Mount Union.

The Jaguars used Shorts some on punt and kick returns last season as well.

Blackmon is sitting out the opener as he gets up to speed after missing the early part of training camp while working out the details of his rookie contract with the team.

Austen Lane Injury: Jaguars DE Will Miss Giants Game

Speaking to the media following a training camp practice on Tuesday, Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey revealed that the foot injury sustained by Austen Lane was worse than initially thought and that the defensive end will miss some significant time, including the first preseason game against the Giants on Friday.

Expected to be out three weeks, the likelihood of Lane participating in the following two preseason games also seems unlikely.

This throws a wrench in the plans of the third-year defensive end to win a training camp battle against rookie defensive end Andre Branch for a starting spot opposite Jeremy Mincey. Branch will now likely get the start for the Jaguars in the place of Lane and will have a leg up in the battle.

Giants Vs. Jaguars: John Estes Expected To Play 1st-Team Guard Against New York

Veteran offensive lineman John Estes will likely be making the move from back-up center to guard for the Jaguars first preseason game against the Giants. Estes spent most of Monday's practice getting first-team reps with both Will Rackley and Jason Spitz on the shelf with injuries.

Estes, who has spent his career in Jacksonville backing up Brad Meester, did not seem bothered by the switch at all and expects the transition to run smoothly. Via John Oesher of Jaguars.com:

"In a way it's kind of easier, because you're not worrying about the calls," Estes said of guard. "You just play and block your guys. The more versatility the better. It's whatever the team needs. I'm just glad they feel I can fill that position for them."

The Jaguars will make their preseason debut against the Giants on Friday night at EverBank Field. From here on out, the Jaguars will have to focus on getting healthy along the offensive front, but getting extra reps for backups and creating more depth can certainly be a positive.
