David Garrard Starts Out As Dolphins Starting QB

The Miami Dolphins have a new starting quarterback, but it's not who you think it is. Veteran addition David Garrard continued working with the first team at minicamp this week, continuing his work with that unit from earlier OTAs. Matt Moore was with the first team, and Ryan Tannehill, the Dolphins' first-round pick, was on the third string.

The important thing to remember here is timing. This is only June. Miami is facilitating some competition at the quarterback position with a pair of youngsters in tow. Giving Garrard some early spring reps gives them a chance to see what he can contribute as a 34-year-old quarterback.

Garrard under center with the starters could be more indicative of the team's looming decision at backup, or at least the other quarterback atop the roster with Tannehill. If both Moore and Garrard look capable, they may have to decide which one would be the primary backup or placeholder for Tannehill.
