In an interview with Brian Briggane of the Palm Beach Post, Carroll speaks with his mother on an almost daily basis, mostly about football. Carroll himself is impressed with some of the information she gives him, like when the Dolphins switched to a 4-3 defense,
"I didn’t think she knew about it, but she was like, ‘I like the 4-3 because now we have Cam (Wake) on the line at all times. I was like, ‘That’s weird. You knew about that?’ "
Nolan also gets plenty of coaching advice from his mother as well,
"She’s trying to tell me how to do my job most of the time; that’s how most moms are.
"It’s funny to hear her talk sometimes; she’s trying to coach me up and I’ll just say, ‘Yes, ma’am, I’ll do it next time.’ "
The third year player out of Maryland has been given a more prominent role with the defense after the Dolphins traded Vontae Davis to the Indianapolis Colts during training camp. Miami head coach Joe Philbin has been impressed with Carroll's improvement over the offseason,
"We believe in the kid, like his competitive skills. Doesn’t say a whole lot. Comes to work, and works awful hard. I have a saying that we’re looking for an honest day’s work out of the guys, and he fits the bill there."
