Virginia Tech vs. Miami 2012: Hurricanes use a gutsy defense to beat Hokies

Joel Auerbach

The Miami Hurricanes beat the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday night thanks in large part to great defensive play in key moments.

The Miami Hurricanes, buoyed by a good performance by their defense, defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday night, 30-12. The Hurricanes took an early 14-3 lead thanks to a pair of Stephen Morris touchdown passes in the first quarter. After Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas scored on a 76-yard rushing touchdown to close the gap to 14-9, the Hokies would get no closer.

Jerry Steinberg of The State of the U praised how the Hurricanes defense played in the second half, shutting the Hokies out. They made the big plays at the right time to kill to the Hokies momentum:

The offense struggled mightily, but the gutsy and opportunistic defense kept the Hokies off the scoreboard in the 3rd.

Miami's D smelled blood on the next series, and a huge sack by Olson Pierre seemed to sap VT of their last bit of hope.

With that win, the Hurricanes are now 4-2 in the ACC's Coastal Division and now control their own destiny to win the division and reach the ACC Championship Game. The Hurricanes next play the Virginia Cavaliers Nov. 10 in Charlottesville, Va.
