The Miami Marlins have put Carlos Lee on waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Rosenthal reported Lee as being one of several star players on the August waiver wire:
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 2, 2012
#Phillies' Cliff Lee indeed on waivers, as reported by@jeffpassan. Also currently on:#Marlins' Carlos Lee,#RedSox's Carl Crawford. MORE
The Marlins acquired Lee from the Houston Astros less than a month ago on July 5. Lee was expected to add a big bat as the Marlins tried to salvage a once-promising season in their new park. But the June woes gave way to more of the same in July and Miami sold off a slew of stars, including Hanley Ramirez and Gaby Sanchez.
It's unlikely a team places a waiver claim on Lee, making him available for trade to any interested partner. As Fish Stripes explains, however, Lee can invoke a no-trade clause -- something he reportedly did before the deadline when Miami thought they had worked out a deal to send the slugger to the Yankees.

The Miami Marlins made a move at the trade deadline, trading first baseman Gaby Sanchez to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins receive centerfielder Gorkys Hernandez and the Pirates competitive balance draft pick. The Pirates also received minor league pitcher Kyle Kaminska in the deal.
The Marlins part way with a player who has hit .202 with three home runs and 17 RBIs. Hernandez has played in 25 games this season and has gotten only two hits in 24 at-bats. Kaminska has played most of this season for Miami's Double-A team in Jacksonville. In 31 appearances, Kaminska is 6-3 with a 5.11 ERA over 49 and one-thirds innings. He's recorded 42 strikeouts while only walking nine batters.

The Miami Marlins are trying to move Carlos Lee one way or another. With the non-waiver trade deadline fast approaching, the Marlins are trying to figure out what to do with Lee. A tweet by USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale says that the Marlins could put Lee on waivers after the deadline.

This move would still give the Marlins an opportunity to trade Lee to another team even after the trade deadline. The Marlins' season has faltered, so they are looking for any way to help themselves going forward next season.

The Trade Deadline approaches for Andrew Friedman and the Tampa Bay Rays
Continue
The trade deadline is approaching quickly. Since talks with the Chicago Cubs involving pitcher Ryan Dempster continue to stall, two other pitchers have re-emerged as favorites to be dealt. Tampa Bay Rays pitcher James Shields and Miami Marlins pitcher Josh Johnson are both getting serious consideration by the Los Angeles Dodgers, among other teams.
The Dodgers seem to be interested in every major pitcher available on the trade market, it just matters right now how much the Dodgers would be willing to give up. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says that was the main reason why the deal for Dempster did not go through for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers offered a couple pitching prospects for Dempster, but the Cubs were asking for top right-handed pitching prospect Allen Webster, a request the Dodgers rebuffed, CBSSports.com reported Thursday. The Dodgers' offer for Dempster was suggested to be underwhelming. They also have leverage in those talks, as Dempster turned down a deal to the Braves and is believed only willing to go to the Dodgers.
Shields' option, worth $9 million next year, is the main reason why he is probably on the trading block. Johnson is in a similar position, so as it was said, its all dependent on how much the Dodgers are willing to give up.

The Miami Marlins shipped Hanley Ramirez off the Los Angeles Dodgers in a surprise deal in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Rumors about a potential Ramirez trade had been circulating for some time, but it did nothing to relieve the initial shock of the news.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria described a "painful moment" to the press.
"It's no secret I love [Ramirez]," Loria told Fox Sports and MLB Network reporter Ken Rosenthal. "He needs to have a fresh beginning, a new beginning ... This is a very painful moment for me. But we had to do something."
Ramirez was hitting just .246 this season, part of the team's deflated expectations this year. He was also due $38.5 million over the remainder of his contract with the Marlins, a burden for a team struggling to win.
Fish Stripes, SB Nation's Marlins blog, judges the deal a success.
Given that the Marlins invested no extra money in sending Ramirez away, they should actually be pretty happy with the return. A top 100 Baseball America prospect is nothing to sneeze at, and Eovaldi's relative success in the majors thus far means that he is another piece that could need only a little seasoning in Triple-A to be ready to insert into the rotation. For the honor of giving away Ramirez's future performance and contract, the Marlins received yet another potential 2013 starting rotation arm to fill the holes undoubtedly made by the departures of Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Zambrano. Not bad at all.

The disappointing Miami Marlins continued the fire sale overnight on Wednesday. Miami shipped third baseman Hanley Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a pair of promising young players to restock their talent pool and start focusing on the future.
The L.A. Times reported the details while most of the country slept. The teams have yet to announce. Los Angeles acquired Ramirez and left-handed reliever Randy Choate. In exchange, they sent rookie starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and minor league pitcher Scott McGough.
Eovaldi is the key to the deal for the Marlins, who shipped Anibel Sanchez to Detroit on Monday. Al Yellon at Baseball Nation had this to say about Eovaldi:
... the 22-year-old righthander has a 4.15 ERA and 1.473 WHIP in 10 starts for the Dodgers this season but was widely regarded as one of the top young pitchers in the Dodgers organization, skipping Triple-A and coming directly to the major leagues from Double-A.
SB Nation Tampa Bay will have more reaction to the deal throughout the day.

The newly-acquired INF Ryan Roberts matches a number of needs for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired infielder Ryan Roberts from the Arizona Diamondbacks late Tuesday night after a big win in Baltimore. The Rays will reportedly send Double-A infielder Tyler Bortnick to the Diamondbacks in exchange for the utility infielder Roberts.
Chatter had intensified that the Rays would make a move to land Roberts, who was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday afternoon. The speculation culminated with the deal on Tuesday night. He will likely get some time at third while Tampa still waits for Evan Longoria to return from his hamstring injury.
Roberts will join the team in Baltimore as they look to build on the win and performance by Jeremy Hellickson on Monday night. The offensive hero of that game, Brooks Conrad, could be left out in the cold and the victim of the corresponding roster move when Roberts is brought aboard.

The Miami Marlins did some dealing on Monday, just ahead of the 2012 MLB trade deadline on July 31 non-waiver deadline. Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported via Twitter that Miami sent starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers.
In return, the Marlins will receiver a package highlighted by starting pitcher Jacob Turner. The 21-year-old right-hander made two starts this season, a win and a loss. Turner was one of the top pitching prospects in Detroit's minor league system.
The deal confirms that the Marlins have indeed become sellers at the deadline, no surprise to anyone familiar with their disappointing season. It might not be the last deal they make, according to Ken Rosenthal.

Veteran right-hand pitcher, James Shields, from the Tampa Bay Rays is reportedly drawing trade interest from the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, according to a report by CBSSports.com.
Shields is 8-6 during the 2012 campaign with an ERA of 4.39. He struck out 10 batters in Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners. Shields isn't the only pitcher on the trading block Tampa Bay, but because of his contract situation, he's the one that makes the most sense:
There have been reports that the Rays might consider dealing any of their five viable right-handed starters. But Shields looks like the most logical candidate due to his $9-million option for 2013.
