Sunday's rubber match between the Marlins and Nationals was the first of the series that didn't require extra innings. That's because Miami won in an 8-0 shutout victory, with Ricky Nolasco leading the way on a four-hit complete game.
Nolasco struck out six batters in the win, but that's not the only area in which he was effective. Nolasco had a game-high two RBIs from his double in the second inning.
Bryan Petersen and Justin Ruggiano plated runs in the fourth inning, while Donovan Solano added to the Marlins' run total in the fifth.
Giancarlo Stanton homered in the seventh inning to give the Marlins a 7-0 lead, before Carlos Lee hit an RBI single that brought in the last run.

The Marlins have been a thorn in Washington's side all season long, but a game-tying home run by Jayson Werth off Heath Bell in the ninth inning on Saturday ensured that Miami would not be going for a three-game sweep Sunday. Werth was the first to bat for Washington in the ninth after more than two and a half hours of rain delay, and cranked Bell's offering deep into the red seats in left center.
Ricky Nolasco (11-12, 4.64 ERA), who shut out the Nationals on Aug. 28, goes to the mound for the Marlins on Sunday. He's allowed just one earned run in 16 innings over his past two starts. Nolasco credits better use and command of his fastball for the recent improvement.
Edwin Jackson (9-9, 3.63 ERA), who's struck out eight or more in each of his past four starts and won his last start against the Cubs, takes the hill for Washington.
The Nats are 6-2 thus far in September and have posted a winning record in every month this season.
Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton loves Nationals park -- he's slugged 10 home runs there in 19 career games at the riverside yard.

The Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 7-6 in 10 innings at Nationals Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Marlins were up 3-0 after the first two innings on the back of a lead-off Gorkys Hernandez home run followed by a Giancarlo Stanton solo blast in the first. The third run of the day came on a Donovan Solano single that scored Donnie Murphy.
Unfortunately, it was downhill for Miami from then on. Down 6-3 in the eighth, the Nats rally started with a two-run bomb in the bottom half of the inning. Jayson Werth then hit a game-tying homer in the ninth to send the contest into extras before Corey Brown won the game with a single in the tenth.
Mark Buehrle pitched well over seven innings, allowing just three runs on five hits and a pair of walks. The southpaw also struck out five.
Drew Storen picked up the win with an inning of work for Washington, striking out the side.
The Marlins will try to win the series on Sunday with Ricky Nolasco on the hill.

The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals played a thrilling game in their weekend series opener on Friday night, but it would be the Marlins who emerged victorious, 9-7. Jose Reyes hit two triples in the ballgame and sealed the victory with a hit in the top of the 10th inning.
The series resumes from Nationals Park on Saturday afternoon, and the Marlins will be looking to take their second straight game from the Nats.
Miami will send Mark Buehrle to the mound to face-off against the Nationals Ross Detwiler. Buehrle enters the game with a .500 record at 12-12 and a 3.73 ERA. The left-hander had previously been on a three-game winning streak before taking a loss to the Mets last Sunday.

The Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals in 10 innings on Friday night, 9-7, recovering after blowing a four-run lead late in the game. The Marlins set things up early by getting to Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg for five runs on six hits, knocking him out of the game after the third inning.
The Miami offense started early, picking up two runs in the first with an RBI double by Giancarlo Stanton and a sacrifice fly by Carlos Lee. Rob Brantly added a solo home run in the second, and Stanton picked up his second RBI with another solo shot in the third. Donovan Solano then drove an RBI single, and that was enough for Strasburg. Miami added one more with a Jose Reyes triple in the fourth, giving them a 6-2 lead entering the seventh.
That was when the Nationals mounted their comeback, starting with three runs (all charged to Carlos Zambrano) in the seventh. Michael Morse then hit a solo home run in the eighth off A.J. Ramos, tying the game at 6-6. That was where things were in the top of the 10th when Reyes hit his second triple of the game, scoring two, and Lee hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, adding one more run. Washington would score one in the bottom of the 10th, but Steve Cishek was able to get control of things and end the game.
Game 2 of the three game series is scheduled for Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET.
