The Charlotte Bobcats are just starting their search for a new head coach, and one of the names that everyone expected will be coming in for an interview on Friday. According to ESPN Florida, Pattrick Ewing will interview with the club today, but friend Michael Jordan won't be part of the process.
The people say Charlotte will interview Memphis assistant Dave Joerger on Friday. The people spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t publicly announced its list of candidates.
Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is friends with Ewing, but is not expected to sit in on the interview. General manager Rich Cho and president of basketball operations Rod Higgins have handled interviews so far.
Those "people" are sources that are familiar with the situation. Ewing has been an assistant with the Magic for the past few years, ad his transition to being the head man is expected to be a fairly smooth one.
Orlando Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing was in the mix for the Charlotte Bobcats job in 2010, but ultimately lost out to now fired Paul Silas. Ewing is reportedly in the mix for the head coaching position with the Bobcats again, but claims he hasn't heard from anyone yet.
"No one's called yet, but I'd definitely have some interest in any job," Ewing told the Orlando Sentinel before tip-off on Tuesday evening. "I've, no doubt, put in my apprenticeship working as an assistant coach for nine years now, so I'm just looking for an opportunity."
Ewing has been an assistant coach in the NBA for nine seasons, spending the past five under Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic. Ewing is close friends with Bobcats owner Michael Jordan and has been rumored for the job ever since Silas was fired after the Bobcats dismal 7-59 season.
