Buccaneers Depth Chart: Expect Bucs To Be Active This Weekend

This is the point before the regular season when all teams are trying to shore things up where they are weak. If the Buccaneers plan to bounce back from their disappointing season in 2011, which led to coaching changes over the offseason, they should plan to be active in adding pieces from veterans released by other teams.

Ira Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune tweeted this earlier Thurdsay:

Ted Larsen, Derek Hardman and OT Jamon Meredith were among the offensive linemen competing for Davin Joseph's position at left guard, since he recently had surgery to repair his torn meniscus. The Bucs could be looking for veteran releases to help fill this void.

Bucs Vs. Redskins Reaction: Few Tampa Bay Reserves Stand Out In Defeat

There wasn't much to like about Tampa Bay's 30-3 loss to the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, but a few Buccaneers players managed to turn in solid performances:

The offensive line was absolutely horrible, but Derek Hardman appeared to be the least awful of them all. Ratlliff didn't make it easy on his receivers, but somehow Tiquan Underwood managed 6 receptions for 82 yards, and looked good one kickoff return, which he ran out for 39 yards. He even managed a tackle to save a touchdown on an interception. Meanwhile, Sammie Stroughter had two catches for 15 yards, and that about ends the list of positives on offense. None of the running backs managed any yards, while receptions were sparse, and blocking was awful.

Buccaneers Vs. Redskins Final Score: Bucs Lose Final Preseason Game, 30-3

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Washington Redskins, 30-3, dropping their final game of the 2012 preseason. With nearly all of the starters sitting the game out, the Bucs offense came to a halt as the team gained only 160 yards. Third-string quarterback Brett Ratliff was under center all night, going 14-for-30 for 164 yards while throwing three interceptions and no touchdowns.

The struggles of the Tampa Bay backup offense weren't limited to the passing game, as three backs combined to make 17 carries for 31 yards, including only six yards through three quarters. Mossis Madu led the team, taking 11 of those carries and 23 of those yards. Even special teams was in on the trouble, with backup long snapper Zack Pianalto sending two snaps low and one tumbling along the ground.

The Buccaneers end the 2012 preseason with a 2-2 record. They kick off the regular season at home, taking on the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 9.

Buccaneers Vs. Redskins Halftime Score: Tampa Bay Trails Washington 16-0

In the final preseason game of the season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have laid a goose egg in the first half against the Washington Redskins, and trail 16-0. Both teams are playing their back up and third string players while the starters get the night off.

The Buccaneers offense has been terrible Wednesday night with only three yards rushing on seven carries between Michael Smith and Mossis Madu. Starting quarterback Brett Ratliff is not doing much better as he is 7-for-11 with 70 yards, but he also has an interception. The Buccaneers offense has not even made it past midfield through two quarters of play.

Their defense has done a fairly good job by holding the Redskins to three field goals and one touchdown. The one touchdown came in the second quarter and was set up by a 46 yard pass from Kirk Cousins to Anthony Armstrong which put the Redskins at the Buccaneers 12-yard line. Then a few plays later Eric Royster punched it passed the defense for a 1-yard touchdown run.

Bucs Injury Update: Amobi Okoye's Knee Worries Greg Schiano

Tampa Bay Bucs defensive tackle Amobi Okoye continues to be limited in his preseason participation because of an injured knee, according to NBC Sports. Okoye's knee has Bucss coach Greg Schiano concerned, and the coach did not sound optimistic when talking to the Tampa Bay Times.

"He has a history with that knee," Schiano said. "We knew when we decided to (sign him) that there was a chance that it was going to have to be handled ... The way he practices, how much he practices -- we are kind of just trying to feel our way through it, see what he can and can’t do."

Okoye played in Tampa Bay's first preseason game, but has missed the following two. He remains limited in practice as well. Okoye remains on the second team on the Bucs depth chart, behind Gerald McCoy and Roy Miller. He is slated to make $2 million this season.

Bucs Depth Chart: Battle For Davin Joseph's Replacement Wages On

With Davin Joseph out for the year with a torn patellar tendon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in need of a new starting right guard.

Ted Larsen is the favorite to win the job, since he has started 14 games for the Bucs over the last two seasons. Though, according to Sander from Bucs Nation, "he lacks power in the run game and is too inconsistent as a pass-blocker."

Larsen started in the team's preseason game last week, though Derek Hardman and Jamon Meredith are likely to both get a shot in the Bucs' final preseason game on Wednesday.

Hardman is in his third season with the Buccaneers, after playing in college at Eastern Kentucky. He started four games in 2010, but didn't start any in 2011.

Meredith, who is in his first season in Tampa Bay, has not started a game since 2009.

Buccaneers Vs. Redskins 2012: Game Preview, Kickoff Time, TV Schedule And More

Buccaneers fans have been worried about fourth-year quarterback Josh Freeman because he hasn't been consistent. On Wednesday, the Bucs go head-to-head with the Redskins, led by rookie Robert Griffin III, in the final week of the preseason.

Neither of these teams have much of an identity, so both are still learning about themselves before the regular season begins. The Bucs need depth all over the field. Washington is hoping the addition of Griffin will be a franchise-changing move.

Take a look at the game schedule and broadcast information:

Date/Time: Wednesday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. ET

Location: FedExField

TV: WTSP 10 (CBS; Tampa), WFTV 9 (ABC; Orlando), WFTX 4 (FOX; Fort Myers), WTLH 49 (FOX; Tallahassee)

Davin Joseph Injury: Bucs Scrambling For Options

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are scrambling after the season-ending injury to guard Davin Joseph. Coach Greg Schiano has at least three players in mind that could step in for Joseph. They include rookie Jamon Meredith, Ted Larsen, who replaced Joseph when he was initially injured, and Derek Hardman.

We'll have different guys in there. (Derek) Hardman, Larsen, Meredith. We're going to play a bunch of guys at guard and then we'll make use of that film in part of our evaluation process. We have time right now before we have to make a final decision, so we're going to utilize that time

Larsen has the most starting experience of the three options, having started 14 games the last two seasons. He is also the only lineman on the team that can backup the center.

Meredith is primarily a tackle, but thinks he can be able to transition to guard if the need arises.

I can play everything except for center. I definitely think I'm versatile. I can pretty much bounce around anywhere and hold my own. I played a little bit (of guard) in Pittsburgh, but not much in the games. Basically at practice. I played it my senior year in college. I definitely have to (prove it).

Is Bucs QB Josh Freeman A Concern?

Let's just get this out there: Buccaneers fans, at least some who write for this network, are getting increasingly worried about their franchise quarterback Josh Freeman. After having what appeared to be a breakout year in 2010 when he threw for 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, he turned around in 2011 and put up 16 TD tosses to go with 29 interceptions.

Not good.

And Freeman hasn't exactly been impressive this preseason. Here's some perspective from Bucs Nation:

Okay, count me in with the crowd that are officially worried about Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman. As BucWild so eloquently wrote in his breakdown of the Freechise, the man the Bucs' hopes and dreams are riding upon is still struggling with things a fourth year quarterback shouldn't be. Progressions, staring down receivers, leading receivers with his passes, decision making and accuracy on the short to intermediate routes continue to elude the Tampa Bay quarterback. After starting out smoking hot against New England, Freeman fell apart. Some of that could have been attributed to the illness he had early in the week but frankly the throws Freeman were missing are ones NFL quarterbacks are expected to make. I know I may be in the vast minority, but I still believe Josh has it in him to be great. The longer this goes, though, the more reality will trump belief.

Doug Martin Wins Bucs Starting RB Job

Doug Martin appears to have won the starting running back position from incumbent LeGarrette Blount. Head coach Greg Schiano has compared Martin to his former player at Rutgers, Ray Rice. With a new head coach, changes were bound to come for the Bucs. Schiano has been impressed with Martin's every down ability and his most recent preseason performance outdid Blount's.

"That's why he moved in and started the game; because he has shown me that much," Schiano said of Martin, via the Tampa Bay Times. "And I don't think he did anything (Friday) night that would say, 'Oh, that wasn't a good move.' I thought he ran the ball well and did some things well. So right now, he's got to continue on that course. He's learning every day. And he's a very open-minded guy. He wants to learn."

Amobi Okoye Injury: Bucs Monitoring DT's Knee

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Amobi Okoye has been hampered by a knee injury during the preseason, and it is unclear if his condition is improving. The Buccaneers are monitoring the situation, and head coach Greg Schiano admitted that the team knew there were risks when they brought Okoye on board.

"It’s not just one surgery," he said. "He has a history with that knee. We knew when we decided to (sign him) that there was a chance that it was going to have to be handled. . . The way he practices, how much he practices -- we are kind of just trying to feel our way through it, see what he can and can’t do."

Tropical Storm Isaac Forces Bucs To Cancel Practice

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had planned on practicing Monday, but with Tropical Storm Isaac still affecting the weather in the area, they decided to cancel workouts. The team will get back together on Wednesday for a walkthrough ahead of that night's game against the Washington Redskins.

The Bucs are 2-1 so far this preseason and head into Wednesday's game coming off a 30-28 win over New England, but there's still plenty to sort out before the start of the regular season on Sept. 9. Among other things, the Bucs will be looking for more consistent output from quarterback Josh Freeman.
