Lightning Vs. Wild: Backstrom Stymies Tampa Bay In 3-1 Loss To Minnesota

The Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Minnesota Wild, 3-1, on Monday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom, who was chased from the game on Sunday night, smothered the Bolts, stopping all but one of their 33 shots. It was a frustrating loss for Tampa which was coming off an undefeated weekend against the Florida Panthers.

After a scoreless first period, Tampa center Steven Stamkos put the Bolts on the board first. Stamkos nabbed a loose puck off the board, beating the Wild defensemen in the neutral zone with his speed and then ripped a shot top shelf past Backstrom to give the Lightning the 1-0 lead. It was his 15th goal of the season, as the red hot center now trails league leader Phil Kessel by only one goal.

The Wild would tie the game shortly thereafter, with a terrible Eric Brewer turnover leading to a shorthanded Cal Clutterbuck goal. Brewer simply tried to turn with the puck behind the net to move up ice and failed to handle it, letting the puck get away from him and slide into the open ice and onto the stick of Mikko Koivu. With a two on none chance, Koivu would slide it over to Clutterbuck who put a move on Tampa goalie Mathieu Garon and evened it at 1-1. It was an embarrassing puck handling display by Brewer, and a costly goal in what was a one goal game until the final minute.

The Wild would take a 2-1 lead in the second period on Pierre-Marc Bouchard's one timer. Bouchard was set up by a beautiful backhand cross-ice pass through traffic from Nick Johnson. All alone, Bouchard ripped the one-timer past a rotating Garon for the lead.

Tampa could not solve Backstrom in the third, peppering the goalie with 13 shots. Minnesota would make it a two goal lead after Garon, who had a solid performance himself, was pulled with a minute to go. Koivu converted the empty netter. The Lightning now come back on Wednesday night against Detroit, looking to bounce back at Joe Louis Arena.

Lightning Vs. Wild: Tampa Trails Minnesota 2-1 Heading To Third Period

Coming off a dominant 5-1 weekend win over the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to extend their winning streak to three games on Monday night against the Minnesota Wild. The Wild lead Tampa 2-1 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul as the clubs head into the third period.

After a scoreless first period, Steven Stamkos opened the scoring in the second with his 15th goal of the season, trailing league leader Phil Kessel by only one. The Lightning center has heated up in a hurry and that continued on Monday when he ripped one past Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom for the unassisted score.

The Wild would respond quickly, however, as Cal Clutterbuck evened the game on a shorthanded goal set up by a terrible turnover by Tampa defenseman Eric Brewer. Minnesota would take the 2-1 lead with a little over two minutes remaining as Pierre-Marc Bouchard found the back of the net, beating Mathieu Garon. Wild goalie Backstrom has stymied the Lightning thus far, who will need to manufacture a goal in the third to pull even.

Lightning Vs. Wild: Steven Stamkos Looks To Lead Tampa Bay To Third Consecutive Win

After a fairly sluggish start to the 2011-2012 Eastern Conference finalists, the Tampa Bay Lightning appear to be rounding into form as we approach the final month of the 2011 calendar year. Thanks to outstanding play from star center Steven Stamkos, the Lightning have won their past two to improve to 13-9-2. Stamkos netted three goals and assisted on one other in Tampa Bay's home-and-home sweep of the Florida Panthers this weekend. He now is second in the NHL with 14 goals, and his 24 points put him in the top-five. The two game stretch ended a slump for Stamkos, who had just one goal in the Lightning's five games (1-4) prior to Thanksgiving.

"We're just utilizing our speed, and we have confidence right now," Stamkos said. "When you get confidence, good things happen."

Minnesota, meanwhile, appears to be heading in the opposite direction as Tampa Bay. The Wild have lost two in a row after a 10-2 run elevated them into first place in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Their most recent defeat, a 5-2 defeat to Calgary on Sunday, was a mistake-filled, sloppy performance that captain Mikko Koivu was disappointed by.

"This can't happen again. It's about our effort and the way we should play the game and support each other out here," captain Mikko Koivu said Sunday, "and it's something we need to learn from."

The two teams split their season series a year ago, with the road team winning both times. The puck drops at Excel Energy Center in Minneapolis at 8 pm est.
