The Tampa Bay Rays were trying to close out a gome game against Chicago by avoiding a sweep by the White Sox on Wednesday afternoon, but just couldn't get a rally going in the final three innings after getting themselves within a run in the sixth. Carlos Pena hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Rays three runs, cutting into the White Sox lead. After that though, the closest the Rays came was in the bottom of the ninth with two on and two out, as Luke Scott popped out to the shortstop.
The White Sox broke the ice first, plating a run in the top of the first inning on an Alex Rios single. Scott tied the game for the Rays with a solo home run in the next inning but the White Sox plated three more runs through the next three innings, which was enough to win the game.
The Rays have now lost three games in a row and four of their last five, ending the month of May with a 14-14 record.

The Rays hope to shut down the White Sox offense just enough to help themselves not lose anymore ground in the AL East.

The Chicago White Sox are one game away from a sweep over the ailing Tampa Bay Rays. Hideki Matsui joined the Rays on Tuesday, popping a home run in his season debut, but it was not enough to give the Rays some much needed offense with Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings on the shelf.
The veteran Matsui and the Rays will square off against White Sox rookie Jose Quintana. The left-hander is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two starts. He has walked five and struck out seven in 12 innings of work, which could bode well for the Rays.
Tampa has Alex Cobb on the mound, who has just two starts himself, both wins. Cobb is in the rotation in place of an injured Jeff Niemann. He has six walks and eight strike outs in 12 innings, and this will be his first matchup against Chicago.
Despite the two losses, Tampa Bay is still tied with Baltimore for first place in the AL East.
The game starts at 1:10 p.m. from Tropicana Field. Fans can watch the game on Sun Sports.

The Tampa Bay Rays (29-21) could not fend off a steady drizzle of singles from the Chicago White Sox (28-22), as the Rays fell 7-2 in LF Hideki Matsui's first game of the season.
The 10th-year slugger Matsui managed to make his Rays debut a memorable one, cracking a first-pitch homer to put the Rays up 2-0 in the fourth inning. Matsui unfortunately offered the only Rays offense on a night when they needed much more.
SP James Shields pitched well through the first five innings -- and even managed to finish the day with 8 strikeouts and just 1 walk -- but a flurry of singles in the sixth inning allowed the White Sox to tack five runs on the board, leading to an eventual 7-2 victory.

SP James Shields did struggle much through the first five innings, but the Chicago White Sox managed to string together 1 walk, 4 singles and 1 double -- which was more of a single that SS Alexei Ramirez stretched into a double -- to put 5 runs on the board in the sixth inning.
Shields ends his day striking out 8 batters, walking only 1, but incredulously allowing 6 runs despite the effort. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays offense has gone silent against SP Philip Humber. After LF Hideki Matsui clobbered a 2-run homer in the 4th, the Rays have managed only two singles.
The Rays currently trail 6-2 into the top of the 7th inning.

The Tampa Bay Rays did not have to wait too long for LF Hideki Matsui to find his rhythm with the bat. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Matsui -- in only his second MLB plate appearance of 2012 -- redirected a 91 mph slider from SP Philip Humber, blasting it deep into right field for a 2-run home run and a 2-1 Rays lead over the Chicago White Sox.

The Rays called up Matsui, who signed April 30 to a minor league contract, despite Matsui still looking for his first homer with the Triple-A Durham team.
Meanwhile, SP James Shields has kept the White Sox lineup generally quiet. Through 4.0 innings, he has 5 strikeouts and no walks with only 1 run allowed.

The Tampa Bay Rays (29-20) have one of the greatest home run hitters in professional baseball history in their lineup on Tuesday. LF Hideki Matsui is hitting sixth against the Chicago White Sox (27-22), and the 10-year MLB veteran and 10-year NPB veteran (Japan's premier baseball league) made his Rays hitting debut in the bottom of the second inning, facing SP Phillip Humber with 1 out.
Working the count to 1-1, Matsui hit a skyscraper fly ball to left field off a slider from Humber, but the ball landed in LF Dayan Viciedo's glove before reaching the warning track.
Matsui owns 173 career MLB home runs and 901 homers in Japan. The 38-year-old outfielder did not hit particularly well in Triple-A Durham over the last month, but the Rays liked his approach and felt his numbers would improve with time.

The Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, in a game that featured a pair of outstanding pitching performances. The Rays will try and get a game back on Tuesday night behind James Shields.
Shields has six wins on the season. He struck out 10 in his last outing, a no-decision against the Blue Jays. Matt Moore had the same number of strike outs in Monday's game. Shields has allowed 10 runs in his last three starts.
Opposing Shields is Philip Humber. The Chicago right-hander was roughed up in his last outing, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks to the Twins. Humber has been punctuated solid stretches of work with meltdowns like that, twice giving up more than eight runs in a game this season.
The game starts at 7:10 p.m. Eastern from Tropicana Field. Fans can watch the game on Sun Sports.

Adam Dunn's batting average has never been much to look at for baseball fans, but that was never where his value was. The White Sox slugger has made a career out of hitting the long ball. He did it again on Monday, smacking his 16th home run, second-highest total in the American League, to power the White Sox to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Dunn's home run spoiled an otherwise solid outing from Rays starter Matt Moore. The lefty struck out 10 and gave up just four hits in seven innings of work, in what was his best outing of the season. The loss drops him to 1-5 for the year.
Chris Sale pitched even better for the White Sox. The lefty struck out 15 Rays' batters, giving up a single run on three hits. It moved him to 6-2 on the season, dropping his ERA to 2.34.
The Rays will try again on Tuesday night as their series with the White Sox continues from Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays activated catcher Jose Lobaton from the disabled list on Monday. To make room for Lobaton on the roster, the Rays sent Chris Gimenez back down to Triple-A Durham.
Lobaton, 27, had been on the shelf for more than a month with a sore throwing shoulder. He is the primary backup to starting catcher Jose Molina. Prior to landing on the DL, Lobaton had just two hits in 12 plate appearances for the Rays.
Gimenez, 29, hit just .191/.236/.206 during his stint with the Rays in place of Lobaton.
The Rays are not getting much offensive production from their catchers. Starter Jose Molina is hitting just .179/.247/.308 in 33 games this season. Molina was acquired as a free agent this season.
