Evan Longoria Injury Update: Joe Maddon Says Third Baseman Close To Being Ready For Rehab Assignment

As the Tampa Bay Rays prepare to face off against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, Rays skipper Joe Maddon talked briefly Evan Longoria, to the Tampa Bay Times. After watching him go through a workout, Maddon says the injured third baseman could be ready to begin a rehab assignment.

Longoria, who suffered a partially torn left hamstring on May 1st, could potentially start the assignment on the team's current nine-game road trip:

"If you just came out and watched the whole workout, you'd say there's nothing wrong with this guy at all," Maddon said. "But of course there is. The way the leg is going to hold up or not is based on the strength level in the leg. (Head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield) has been working hard with him to build up the strength and if Ronnie is satisfied with the strength level, that's the most important issue right now."

Longoria will go through another workout on Wednesday in Baltimore and then be re-evaluated.
