Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have placed first baseman Carlos Pena on the 15-day disabled list with a plantar fascia sprain in his right foot.  The move is retroactive to August 1.
Pena is batting .212 with a team-leading 23 home runs and 68 RBI in 102 games for Tampa Bay this season.

The Rays recalled pitcher Dale Thayer from Triple-A Durham to take his spot on the roster. The right-hander was 2-1 with three saves and a 3.35 earned run average in 37 games for the Bulls.
