The Tampa Bay Rays placed starting pitchers Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder strains.
Niemann, who is 10-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 22 games this season, was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday at Toronto. Davis, who is 9-9 in 21 starts this year and sports a 4.45 ERA, had been scheduled to start Tuesday in Detroit, but will be replaced by rookie Jeremy Hellickson. The Rays also recalled reliever Mike Ekstrom from Durham.
Manager Joe Maddon said before Monday night’s game that any DL stints by Davis and Niemann would be “minimal” and “precautionary”.
