After a long season off, the college basketball season is finally underway. There are three teams in our region that kicked off action this weekend, and lucky us, we have three wins to show for it. Let's run them down.
The Florida Gators had by far the biggest win of the season over Jackson State, 99-59. They were led by a 12 point 10 rebound double-double from Patric Young, but this game might be remembered as the debuts of Mike Rosario (a transfer from Rutgers) and Bradley Beal (a highly touted freshman shooting guard. Beal started, played 28 minutes, and scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting from the field. Rosario came off the bench but still played 20 minutes and scored 19 points.
The Florida State Seminoles had more trouble than they would have liked against Jacksonville thhis weekend, but they still escaped with a comfortable 79-67 victory. Michael Snaer led all starters with 16 points, but the Seminoles were sparked by a pair of bench players. Deividas Dulkys and Terrance Shannon came off the bench and scored 16 and 15 points respectively.
The South Florida Bulls had the narrowest victory of all this weekend, just a two-point 61-59 victory over Marist. The Bulls only played seven people in that game, and only six of them registered points. Ron Anderson jr. led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds.
