Despite Ownership Change, Jaguars Extend Contract Of GM Gene Smith

A busy day for the Jaguars continues, after firing their head coach and selling the team, the Jaguars have elected to extend the contract of GM Gene Smith for three more years.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will reportedly be sold today and they have also fired their head coach. But there will be some stability as the team heads into the new regime next year. According to Chris Mortensen, the Jaguars have elected to extend the contract of GM Gene Smith for three more years following this season.

Smith has been with the Jaguars since the team was first born in 1995, and he's led the team to mixed success during his tenure. They have made it to the playoffs six times under him, although only twice in the last 10 seasons.

It is also worth noting that Gene Smith turned down an extension last offseason. Smith's contract was set to expire after this year, so it appears that the new ownership wants him around for longer. In fact, Jack Del Rio was the only member of the coaching staff or front office with a contract that ran past this year, but we all know how that worked out.

We'll have plenty more on this busy day in Jaguars football at SB Nation Tampa Bay, but for more on the Jaguars, head over to our Jacksonville blog Big Cat Country.
