According to the Twitter feed of the St. Petersburg Times' Rays beat writer Mark Topkin, the Tampa Bay Rays have made their first cuts of the spring, reassigning nine players.
Pitchers Brian Baker, Jonah Bayliss, Matt Bush, Richard De Los Santos, Ricky Orta, Albert Suarez, and Alex Torres as well as outfielder Brandon Guyer will all now report to minor league camp.
There are no real surprises here, as all of these players projected as minor leaguers with little shot at making the club out of spring. However, Matt Bush has impressed in Spring Training with his live fastball, so his early departure is one of the most unexpected. He will likely start the season in Advanced-A or Double-A, and still has an outside chance of cracking the Rays bullpen this season depending on his performance there.
Suarez and Guyer have both spent most of the spring sidelined with injuries. Guyer was acquired in the Matt Garza trade, but was unlikely to make the Rays due to their extensive outfield depth.
