Cesar Cabral has been returned to the Red Sox. His pitching performance, as noted earlier today, has been hot and cold all preseason and management did not see enough evidence to believe he could make the jump from single-A to the majors. With Cabral returned, Cesar Ramos is a near lock for the 2011 bullpen.
Some suspected the Rays had kept Cabral this long to try and work out a trade with Boston, but even if that were true the red stockings apparently wouldn't budge. The Rays paid $50K for Cabral per MLB regulations, and will receive $25K for his return. Cabral was the sixth Rule 5 pick in Rays history, of which four have been traded and two returned.
